Road trip, tons of massive paint "chips"

We recently drove from Seattle -> San Diego for Christmas, and despite there being no other chips on the hood, front, or windshield, it kind of looks like the area of the roof where the windscreen meets the body has been absolutely sandblasted. In the photos below, the close up is roughly 1.5-2" wide!

Any idea WHY this would have happened? It looks like the metal is visible underneath--should I be worried about rust?

That looks like paint adhesion failure. Has the vehicle ever had a body repair in that area or a windshield replacement where they may have used some strong chemical adhesive remover? It's very uncommon for BMW factory paint to flake off like that

Unfortunately, not that I'm aware of. I purchased this car at 33k miles, and it just hit 100k--nothing on CarFax, but also seems like it'd be weird to only see it now. We've driven 3+ hours to various spots, but never nearly as far as this one.

Definitely an adhesion issue, and not the paint being hit by anything. What probably happened is that the paint was already loose in those spots, and the sustained high speed "winds" from highway speeds just started lifting it off. I'm guessing that is not factory paint.

Check your owners manual binder to see if you have your warranty booklets. I believe paint extends past the normal 48 month warranty.
