Most improvements come from Phone updates as head unit is just a receiver.

Bummer. You would hope to get at least the dealership updates.

Being aware of that, I went with kubax86 fix. Check him out!

I get that, just making fun of BMW's lame @$$ excuse for charging an annual fee for ACP so they can stay up to date with their software on vehicles. I just got this excuse from my dealer this weekend after pointing out the ridiculous subscription fee in their CS survey. It's clear by reading many threads here, BMW's efforts for software updating stink.

Frustrating that it doesn't seem to even need a software update, just some config changes. You'd think this would be a no brainer for BMW. It's not like folk are going to trade their car for ID7 just for full screen carplay. Why not just update it.

What would be the best way to implement car play on an F97 X3? I think it’s ID 6 and is certainly NBT EVO version R

CarPlay or EBT was not ordered from the factory, I’m planning an OEM wireless cradle install and I’m happy to plug in a WIFI antenna so adding CarPlay would be a bonus.

Thanks.

Damn. Just had this done!!

BMW reverse course on Car Play

Apple CarPlay in BMW vehicles is finally going to be free. Hallelujah! Autocar reported that BMW is eliminating the subscription charge for folks in the U.K. earlier today, and we just received confirmation from BMW that the change applies to U.S. BMW owners as well.

A BMW spokesperson told us that they “can confirm that this change does also apply to the U.S. market.” When we asked why the sudden change of heart, the same spokesperson sent us this statement: “BMW is always looking to satisfy our customers’ needs and this policy change is intended to provide BMW owners with a better ownership experience.”

To that we say, took ya long enough. BMW was the only manufacturer to make folks pay to use Apple CarPlay on a recurring basis. A 12-month subscription was billed at $80 for BMW owners. A 240-month subscription was $300. Now, those charges are going away. The decision to make folks pay for a subscription service that comes free of charge in every other CarPlay-equipped car felt like an affront to luxury from the start. This was only amplified by the usability issues that wireless BMW Apple CarPlay products have given us (and plenty of others) in the past. Making Apple CarPlay wireless was a great idea, but the implementation proved to be problematic.

There are still a few questions to be answered when it comes to free Apple CarPlay in BMWs. The timing for when folks will be able to stop paying is unclear. And then there are the poor folks who already shelled out hundreds of dollars to use the software for months on end. We’re guessing some refunds are in order, and we have questions out to BMW to clarify how the company will go about this switchover. Once we have answers, we’ll update this story with more information.

For now, it’s all good news for BMW owners with iPhones. Android users are still out of luck, as Android Auto functionality wasn’t part of today’s announcement. Side note: we're going to guess that this means 2020 Toyota Supra owners won't have to pay for Apple CarPlay either.

Guys, still a bit confused about this: are any of the sellers here able to provide the codes to activate CarPlay if there’s no extended Bluetooth, wifi, Navigation or the ability to buy CarPlay through the connected store. I can check the firmware version in the morning, I have the 8.8 screen iDrive, manufacture date August 2019. It’s an ECE spec.

Have any of the coding folks come up with a solution to restore full screen CarPlay after the backup camera recall firmware update? I'm holding off on this update, because I love full screen CarPlay. I'd never want to go back to that terrible squished view again!

I was using FSC's usb XXXXX.bin file patch. When I took in for an oil change yesterday, they've also updated the system for a backup cam recall.

How can I have my full screen back? I don't even have a half screen version at this point as free 1yr period has ended.

Now that I have to get an ENET cable, is purchasing a code from one of the people selling full screen activation the only way to do this or can I use a different coding program to do this? (Or is just getting the full screen code from someone online cheaper)

Could not agree more. This is some real low hanging fruit stuff that BMW should start doing to better compete with other premium brands. Tesla comes to mind... they're always pushing out little updates to make the car even better. That's what I want! I would have gotten a model Y if they were out already. My next car will probably be a Tesla unless BMW and other manufacturers up their update game. Which they will, it's only a matter of time, but you'd think they'd jump at the chance to be first and get a leg up on MB and Audi...
