help with tire dilemma - 295s in rear?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Thanks to a screw finding its way into my driver’s front tire, I’m faced with a dilemma. Do I replace the individual tire (PS4S with only 3k miles. 892m wheel) or do something more?

Option 1- pull screw out and pray. It’s been in for a week with no air loss. Too close to the sidewall for anyone to patch safely. Maybe it didn’t pop through?? Pic below
Option 2 - replace one front tire. $525 all in.
Option 3 - move stock rears 265 21” to front. replace 255s with 295/35ZR21 (107Y) then move them to rear. $1000 all in. I’m intrigued by the idea of a wider stance. Have 12mm spacers now and still would like a bit more rubber back there.

I know there is a thread on option 3 but does anyone have more recent feedback on the “mod”?

Thank you!!

That is definitely not too close to repair, I’ve had nail repairs on tighter margins than that, you should easily be able to find a place to repair it, go to a couple Discount Tires, tip the manager a little if you have to, that’s definitely repairable.

I’d go 295s, but that’s just me. I swear the ride is subtly more compliant over bumpy roads since I did 265/295. You have a 2022 though so probably won’t notice. I haven’t noticed and steering or tram-lining issues with mine. That includes speeds 100-130+. I do not have spacers though (10mm ones are in the mail )

I would Definitely try option 1 first, but have 2 or 3 ready to go. Some tire places will pull for free. I had a similar situation once where I ran over something and I didn’t lose any pressure. Went to a tire chain store and the tire tech pulled it out and checked everything for free. I gave him a $20 bc why not.

Maybe post a pic from back aways, but from that angle, it def looks repairable to me, some shops if real busy may not want to deal with it, I’ve had nails where one shop (usually always a Discount Tire) said no, then the next Discount Tire shop few miles away said no problem.

The main thing is if any part of the repair circle patch will hit the curve going up the sidewall. But even then the patch can be trimmed a bit. I think they might even be using square patches now, not sure.

Appreciate the feedback. A local independent said he wouldn’t patch it so I assumed I’d hear the same from all places. I’ll give it a try at a couple of the chains first before I commit to replacing tires. Also, will post a better pic in the light tomorrow. I do want those 295s but will stick with the current set if I can get away with a patch.

You don't need an independent to patch a tire. Either DIY or find a "tree shade mechanic" who can do it. Dealers and to some degree the upper "independents just want to sell you a new tire.

You could easily plug this yourself. Kits available at Walmart for $10. Or as others said, many small shops will patch it for you. Especially if you have a rapport with one, which I always recommend to folks. Find a local shop and build a relationship with them.

Same thing happened to me right after buying it (with 2,200 miles). It couldn't be patched. Your looks like it can, I would go that route.

I ended up buying 2 rear tires brand new. Didn't want to chance messing anything up with the difference in depth. GL, OP.

Here’s a better angle. 1.5” from the sidewall curve. It’s close…

Still fine, plug it, worse case it leaks and you get a new tire in a few thousand miles, its not going to "blow up"

Thank you!!
i have 265/295 PSAS’s on my truck with 14mm future classic spacers all around… I’m also lowered on KWV3’s so i experience a SLIGHT rub in the rear. Other than that, love how the setup looks and it feels perfectly fine. I’ve hit speeds 150+ at a roll/dig race event and had 0 issues.

This is a very simple patch/fix that you can do yourself!!! Any auto supply store shld sell tire patch kits ready to go! If you’ve never done it, there’s a plethora of good youtube videos showing the process. Always good to have a patch kit just incase anyways. Shop that denied doing it probably didn’t want to take the risk/liability of it popping again and that’s why they denied. Can defenitely be patched up though.

With this platform rear biased, it seems much more planted and less twitchy in the rear, also a bit smoother and less nervous over bumps.
I have 295s for my winter setup and 315s for my summer, FYI.

What size rims are the 315’s on? I’ve heard about a few guys running them, but I can’t remember the actual wheel/tire size. Any issues with rubbing?

Here's my build thread, the wheel and tire info is in it:
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...ight=completed

No issues, but I'm not lowered at all.
