Brake Service

Hello All,

Just rolling into 50k miles on the 2021 X3MC and the Brake fluid service light has appeared. Was thinking it was probably time for rotors and pads as well.
Do most people do their own service or is this something that has to go to the shop to reset or program sensors?

Normally I would order parts and do myself, but figured I would ask the experts before just jumping in. I was told by a trusted buddy from the Porsche club to stick with OEM rotors as he tried aftermarket in the past and was not happy with performance.

Any advice is appreciated.

You can easily do it yourself. Is this the first time your fronts are being done? My 2020 I just picked up already needed new front rotors (as part of the safety) at only 28k miles, they were at the min. thickness already.

Those rotors look pretty good. Can you order just the rotors alone... ? Or is this just a kit... ?

Apparently Dynamic Friction is the same as R1 Concepts.

Bottom right click on the info button, you can order the rotors alone. $136 each.

They have cheaper ones that aren't coated for $120, but get the coated ones, the hub will stay clean longer.

I've run multiple sets of the Power Stop from Rock Auto with zero issues and I drive hard, but they don't make them for the X3M. I'm tempted to try these when I need them. Me being in Canada, the dealer wants $750+ per rotor.

Can we throw out some numbers in terms of prices instead of saying big money lol. Maybe this will help others who are overpaying at some places

I'm at like 35K; I've not gotten a brake pad replacement notification and the dealership says their fine (I got the maintenance plan - sue me), is that not odd? I personally start to get antsy at 20K

You get 2 notifications - one based on time/odometer which is likely the one you got, and then an actual warning once the pad sensor trips.

You should be fine. The sensors trip when its below 3mm. Need to drive harder

I just got my rear pads replaced at 26.5k under Ultimate Care+. The front pads still had 6mm inner and 7mm outer on the drivers side wheel. Front rotors were 35.2mm (min is 34.4mm) and rear rotors were 23.1mm (min is 22.4mm).
This is with 2 track attack days at Dominion Raceway and 2 HPDEs at Summit Point...

Q.. in your iDrive under vehicle status/service required, does it even list the front & rear brake pads? Mine doesn't, it just lists engine oil, brake fluid, and I think vehicle inspection.

My previous 340i and my wife's '19 Countryman list the pads and when it thinks they are due.

My 2021 is the same. I believe either the pads don't show until the sensor is tripped or it's a iDrive 7/LCI thing.

It won't show until it is tripped. Once it tripped, it specifically said my rear pads needed to be replaced.

Dude you need to tell me who your dealer is. My local wont even look at them until the light is tripped...

I really dislike my local shop.

To be clear, only my rear pads were replaced since the sensor tripped. They did not touch the front pads or both rotors, since they are above thresholds.

Does your rotor have an edge showing around the perimeter since it’s so worn? My pads are gunna pop any day now
