Strange Rattle

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My car seems to have a strange metallic rattle between 1400-1800 rpm. Very noticeable yesterday and today with the window down driving in a multi storey car park in 1st gear.

I've recorded it on my phone and will upload if I get a chance.

It's not causing problems but my car is at BMW this week to get a scuffed wheel corrected so I will ask. Also in for the RIS in 2 weeks.

Any had a similar issue?

Those can be difficult to figure out. Any chance it's comming from part of the exhaust system?

That's what I think.

Pretty sure not engine related.

The BMW hopefully can isolate that rattle when they rev the engine and another tech is under the car.

Can't say for definite as ive not collected my car yet but after having quite a few ///M cars i bet its the wastegates on the turbos . Both my f80s had it and it was never rectified. Good luck with getting it fixed

Thanks, it's at Sytner Nottingham now, getting a wheel fixed and a tech is going to check out the rattle, they think loose heat shield - should find out tomorrow and I collect my car Friday.

Currently in a Mini Cooper S - not a cheap car by price, but boy does it feel low rent! Fun though.

I've had similar heat shield rattle issues on several vehicles. Usually it is because a mount point rusted off but sometimes it is just bent and hitting a pipe.

Hopefully it is the latter - but curious what they find.

Collected my car today after over 2 days in a Mini Cooper S!

Wheel is perfect and brand new looking again (thankfully!)

Strange noise is a broken weld on an exhaust bracket. Part is on back order, so hoping to get it fixed when my car goes in for it's RIS on the 17th December.

So thankfully nothing serious and it's not really bothering me as it only happens between 1500-1800 rpm.

The only annoying noise I've got is a little brake squeal occasionally when feathering to a stop at traffic lights, after its rained when the brakes are slightly damp. Not in the dry, not in the wet. Seems to be the front left. It's apparently common with M car brakes and BMW see it as a feature. May or may not go away as they bed in. Anyone else?

I was going to post about a broken exhaust bracket weld as I had that on my F80 and it needed a whole new system as it's a one piece unit.

Well they're telling me there is a part, but if they don't get a date for the part by Xmas I'll push harder. Not too bothered about getting a new exhaust given the time it will take to fit versus the bracket!

Yeah sure I've no idea about the X3M, I was really surprised when they told me they said it's one piece up to the down pipes which I think have the cats in them and the bracket is welded on to the exhaust, like you say it's no issue either way.

Cheers. Thought it might be. My 430i and 320d were silent but the brakes on this thing are huge.

I'm bumping this thread to see if anyone has this same issue. I have a very defined metallic rattle between 1400-1800 RPM. It's coming from the exhaust or associated shields. Regardless of valve position I still get this awful rattle when pulling away at low speeds. Anyone else? If so..can someone point me to this potentially broken weld?

+1 on this issue. I let the SA know when I brought it in for the break in service. The tech blamed it on the M license plate bracket I had purchased still in the plastic clam shell in the back. Then blamed the blend mount radar detector. I picked it up when my SA was lunch. I brought it right back after still hearing the noise. Another SA listened and told me it was "a M car thing" and totally normal. I don't think it sounds normal but this is my first BMW. Curious on the possible broken weld location as well......

While it's faint in the video compared to the exhaust...that sounds exactly the same as what I'm dealing with. This is my 4th M car...and I can assure you it's not an M car thing.

Thanks for confirming, Hamy. Let me know if you get any answers. I am planning on bringing it to the dealership next week and having the SA and tech listen with me so we are identifying the same sound. I'll post on the findings. On the video.... forgot to shut the valves.... Let me know if you need a "less exhaust-y" sounding video for any reason.

Ours makes the exact same noise, but louder. They reckon it's a mount on the down pipe.. they have ordered the bit that they think it is and it's in for it fitting on the 29th. I shall let you know if it cures it

Got mine back, it was a clamp/bracket on the down pipe. Replaced and the rattle has gone on mine
