What’s been the results with RaceChip vs JB4 on these cars? How about detectability for any warranty work? Any serious problems using either setup?

Worth noting that I am in California so I’m limited to 91 octane.

I’d go with Dinan for the warranty, but they pulled the tuner for our cars.

Thanks to everyone in advance!
Thanks for starting this post. I am in the same boat with my 2019 X3 M40i. I am a little leery about flash tuning it right now even though I will eventually want to do that. I have heard good things about RaceChip but have also read about a couple of bad experiences. Hopefully some folks will post their experiences with both RaceChip and JB4.

Love my JB4. Also like it’s ability to open & shut the exhaust valve with the BC button.

JB4 will add more average and peak power and go faster than RaceChip if you want to push boost and parts.
Any experience with RaceChip’s warranty? I’m worried about getting into a situation where there’s a high dollar warranty claim and the piggyback voids my factory warranty. Looking at RaceChip and AC Schnitzer for the warranty.

This is a good question. Obviously we all hope to never have to use something like this but I like that Racechip offers a warranty like Dinan does. I have read in another thread in a different forum where one poster was having a lot of trouble getting a response from RaceChip in regards to a warranty issue. Not sure if that was due to them being in Germany or if their customer service was just not good. Hopefully someone that has had some experience with their customer support will chime in.

ACS has a really decent warranty and unlike I would expect the others, I think (my view only) ACS will be up there in wanting any issue sorted. You pay a huge premium for ACS and I expect 2/3rds is for the warranty !

If I did anything it would be ACS if the car was under warranty (currently a year old).

Don't forget TDI-Tuning.

I have a 19 X3 M40i and went through the same thing. I liked RaceChip but trying to get tech info and such was hard, ultimately passed on it for that reason mainly.

JB4, have a JB on another car and really not thrilled with it. I know for some people it is the right solution but not for me on this car. I wanted something incredibly simple and effective with a set it and forget it mindset.

TDI-Tuning I came across by chance, browsing videos online and such. Reached out to them directly and they were very responsive and informative. They also added with bluetooth they could send updates if ever needed and switch to another car in the future for a small fee. RaceChip offered it too but only for 2 years and again getting info I found difficult. TDI Tuning sent me graphs and specs and I was sold, also less expensive than RaceChip to boot. Got the tuner box in maybe 2 days, so don't let the overseas bit concern you, it was faster than ground shipping in the US. Fit and finish of their harness and box was excellent, blows away the JB I have on another car. Instructions were very comprehensive and the app works flawlessly. Night and day difference after install, eventually used dragy and on things like 40-100mph I was able to shave a full second off between the tuner and stock. Without launch control I ran a 4.3 0-60 and 12.5 1/4 mile.

All in all I highly recommend checking out TDI Tuning.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I ended up going with CarBahn (Steve Dinan's shop). They offer the same Dinan factory-matching warranty. The tune is a little conservative (probably why they offer the warranty) -- 441 flywheel hp, 490 flywheel torque, which translates to ~375whp and ~407wtq. However, given that they read ~325whp and ~360wtq on a stock car, I'm happy.

Tune is veryyyy noticeable and the car pulls much harder in mid-range RPM and especially in 3rd and 4th gear.

You guys with these piggy back programmers should do a Dragy pull to share your results with all of us.

Just picked up a Dragy. Running JB4 with Map3 and K&N. Being in AZ, I'll have to try to get out at night or early morning for cooler weather but I'll be sure to post results! That said, I'm 2020 and past the Build date that's flash-able at the moment so I had to go piggback. I've had JB4 on two other BMWs and trust what Terry and the guys have been doing for years. Excited to see if I can hit 3s for 0-60 and hopefully mid 12s?

I'm glad to hear your thoughts on the Carbahn flash tune. I have the Carbahn tune on my 340i and love it. So I've been seriously considering it for my 2019 X3 M40i also (just need to convince my wife since she is the primary driver) but was curious to hear from someone that had it done. I'm glad to hear you think it's noticeable. I know it is in my 340i and that tune has less power than the tune for the X3 M40i due to that version of the B58 not having quite as good of a cooling system as in the M40i.

Urgh, looks like i'll be the "second person" to go with Carbahn, kind of hoping first to report back with the result.

Given the remaining factory warranty left through 2023, going with Carbahn was just no brainer.

More so technically, in knowing how they "unlock" the DME is to not depend on backdating the bootloader means the DME remains up to date with all other parts of latest ISTEP versions. That may not mean much at the end, but until 2023, taking more conservative approach. After Feb 2023, well, gloves come off then...
