Upgrade tires on stock Comp wheels advise needed

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi guys,

Would the following tire setup work on stock X4M Competition wheels?

265 / 40 / R21 fronts
295 / 35 / R21 rears

Trying to stay within 1% difference in diameter vs stock.

For reference, here are the stock wheel and tire specs:

255 / 40 / R21; 21 x 9.5 fronts
265 / 40 / R21; 21 x 10 rears

I know 295 might be a little stretched for the 10" wheel but do you think it will be bearable in terms of both looks and performance?

Also, want to make sure that there will be no rubbing issues with increased width of the tires.

Thanks in advance.

265 on the front will hit the inner bracket. Backs will hold more tire width.

That's unfortunate re: the fronts. Will 265s clear with spacers?

Very possible. 10-12mm might work. You would have to fit them and see. I was going to use 265's all around for winters....no go...

I see. I assume you tried fitting the back wheel in the front? This test would only be accurate if fronts and rears have the same offset. Do you know if that is the case?

Thank you. So 265 mounted on 10" wheel isn't identical fit to 265 mounted on 9.5" wheel.

onfireX5, can you please comment?

Did not try the rear wheel/tire combo. Ordered 265’s, took their section width over the 255 and measured the clearance. Sent the 265’s back.

Since 265s in the front are a no go, what would you guys recommend for the wider rear tires setup?

255/40/R21 fronts (stock size)
295/35/R21 rears

OR

255/40/R21 fronts (stock size)
285/35/R21 rears

Why not just use 295 35 21 in rear. It’s circumference is 29.1” vs 29.3 on the 265 40 21. Almost identical.

I was leaning towards 295s as well. My only concerns were: will it fit without any clearance issues and the fact that I am significantly widening the rears while keeping the fronts stock (don't want it to have any negative impact on the handling). 285s in the rear would be a modest / less aggressive change hence the reason I am considering this option.

You also may want to contact Ind-Distribution. They are experts on BMW and they recently purchased a X3M comp. Spoke to them and I know they are working on fitment.

You say that 265's will hit the front bracket. Which bracket? I see that they could possibly rub the strut. I think small spacer front and rear would solve the problem. Am I wrong? I'm looking at a x3m now, but need to have all-seasons. I've done winter wheels/tires in the past and don't want to go that route. I have found that if you go up one size, 255/265 to 265/275 then all-seasons are available.

I agree with your assessment. I took a closer look and wider tire in the front (eg 265) will rub against strut assembly. 10-12mm spacer should correct this problem in theory. For the rears, you would only need a spacer for 295 and up.

I'm all for going wider in the rear but are there going to be any adverse effects to the vehicle's handling?

There's got to be a reason why the X3MC came with 255 F/265 R spec.

Why do people try to out engineer the BMW engineers who put certain size tires on for a reason?

I went with 265/40/21(f) and 285/40/21(r) on stockers with 15mm spacers. I posted some pics on my build thread.
