Can't decide between RFT or normal tires

My X3 tire setup is 245/45/19 on front and 275/40/19 that came with Pirelli P Zero rft. After 34k kilometers, the rear is almost the the end of its life so I'm looking into changing it. The only think I like about the P Zero tires is the visual appearance, comfort is absolutely mediocre as it ride like a solid rock especially for rear passengers. Since I'm usually the one driving it, I didn't notice much until recently I sat on the rear seats for a 20 minute ride on normal road and I was going crazy. The rear seat is really a living hell to be. The X3 can with normal standard suspension.

I have been deciding between rft vs normal tires and I thought I would go for normal tires. After many calls to local tire shops, I was again at a cross road. Most of them do not have normal tires for my size and all strongly recommend rft. There was one shop that have non run flat Yokohama advan tires but the price is the same as rft.

Below are the rft that is available in my country:
1. Pirelli P Zero pz4 rft
2. Pirelli Cinturato P7 rft
2. Michelin primacy 3 zp
3. Bridgestone s001 rft

My priority is ride comfort.
Please let me have your comments on which offer the most comfortable ride. Thanks to all!

I would definitely get away from the hard side walls of the run flats. Best thing I have done. At 7/32 tread depth I replaced my Goodyear eagle LS2 due to them chopping badly with my front tires. And I regret not doing it sooner.

+1....runflats have improved over the years but still do a darn good job of wrecking the ride quality of any car - go regular tires and you will be pleasantly surprised how much ride quality is improved.

3 reason to go with continental dws06

- treadwear of 560. they will last for a while.
- they got a strong warranty (50k)
- for comfy all season, they grip as hell.

so :

Yeah go with the non-RFTs. Just get yourself an air compressor and fix-a-flat just in case and pocket the savings, and go enjoy the better ride.

If it helps, you can go to slightly wider or narrower tires. Here's the combinations that would work well with your staggered setup.

235/45/19 & 265/40/19
255/45/19 & 285/40/19

Thanks for all your comments. Currently, there only 2 models of non-rft available in my country. Bridgestone Turanza T005A and Yokohama advan V105.
Turanza: $285/tire
V105: $390/tire
P Zero pz4 rft: $390/tire

Michelin doesn't have my tire size for any of its models.

If I go with Turanza, the tire dealer specifically said that if it's fitted on my car, there's no warranty from tire because they consider the tire is not fitted on the correct vehicle because my car is standard with rft.

Eventually, I made the decision and changed my tires to Yokohama V105s. First impression, the ride quality and comfort is noticeably better. I'm happy with the change however, the price for these tires and almost the same as p Zero rft.

Definitely go with non-run flats if your looking for ride comfort. It's too bad your country doesn't have Continental DWS06 or Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's. These two tires go head to head in comparison and are considered the best bang for your buck.

I don't know much about Bridgestone Turanza T005A and Yokohama advan V105. I personally run the Michelin's and my F25 is smooth as butta even at really high speeds.

The first two don't really mean much though. The treadwear is a poor indication of anything really. The warranty is just that, a warranty against manufacturer defects. When was the last time someone had a defect in their tire? Rather rare.

Strange. I never really noticed a difference in the ride between RFT and Non RFT. The difference is my OEM Run Flats needed replacement after 28,000 miles. I'm 41,000 miles later on the replacement tires with at least this spring/summer/fall before I need to reevaluate the tires again, absent something like an unrepairable flat.

Where I live one often has a winter and summer set of wheels and tires. In my case the summer tires are RFs while the winter ones a NRFs. The difference in ride comfort with the NRFs is better, so much better that I hate putting on the summer tires each year. Additionally, the winter set is probably 10 lbs per wheel/tire less. Fortunately, I am replacing the summer RFs this week with conventional tires.

This is a bit difficult for me to grasp- have you run both type of tires on your car or driven an X3 fitted with regular tires?

For what it's worth, maybe it is the way I drive, I thought there was a small difference when I first changed, but then I didn't notice it again. Maybe switching back would be noticeable again.

I have the 18" wheels.

I think there's a definite difference. I have Michelin Primacy RFTs for the summer and Michelin Ice Edge X non-RFT for my winter only tires. Size is 245/45/19. The snow tires are much quieter and provide a better ride than the summer tires. Can't really tell a difference in handling. When the summer tires are at life's end I'm going to switch to non-RFTs as well.

Which brand/model runflats are currently on your car?

I'm curious as when I was test driving a few F25's last summer (used cars, private sellers) I drove 5 cars that had runflats, really only one felt comparable in ride quality to regular tires- I think the seller had Goodyear RF's and I recall on 19" wheels. It was pretty good ride- but all the others with runflats were really pretty stiff/harsh.

Thanks/Bill

Bridgestone Turenza is on the car now. Pirrelli P7 (I think) were the factory tires that wore out after 28K miles.

so :

Those are the tires I got for mine. Absolutely love them, and getting away from RFT's was one of the best things I have ever done to my X3. Its like a new more comfy car. And in case of a flat I got one of the BMW roadside tire kits for christmas from family. Im a tiny bit nervous not having a spare, but its worth the risk for the improved ride.

Its a measurable indication. all depends how the manufacturer are doing their test. Just like HP. Its not perfect but gives a good indication. Yes a 200hp fwd hyundai veloster is 1 sec slower than an heavier audi 200hp quattro. But still can gives you a good indication; like the veloster will do the 0-60 under 10 sec for sure.

On my dd I run continental DW, and they last way less.

I use DWS for many many years, 'Im on my 3rd set, and people will say the same , they last for a very long time. Ratio miles-per-dollar is very good.

Warranty might not be important to most people, but on quattro and Xdrive, many stories with continental did change 4 tires under warranty because all 4 tires ''should'' be the same outside diameter.

Not all company will do this.

Just switched over from RFTs to non RFTs. Even wife noticed the difference. Better ride/comfort, handling/grip. Never looking back.
