Door welding finish quality

Hello everyone,

I just got G01 I picked for my wife and must say I am quite surprised about the poor quality of welding detail in the door conters.

Never actually noticed it on previous models I owned.

Is it the same for you?

I don’t know if it makes difference to where and how BMW weld, but the G01 doors are Aluminium.

Almost looks like it’s designed to allow any water to escape.

Purposely done water drain openings. I agree they look ugly though.

What specifically about those corner openings denotes poor quality to you?

Compared to G20(made in Germany) they look awful. I suppose the german plant is more strict about manufacturing quality. G01 is manufactured in South Africa.

Nevertheless, thanks everyone for clarification!

Does the G20 use steel or aluminium doors ?

G01 is made is USA, SA, and China depending on model for all global markets. I don’t think it’s a QA issue.

You may be distinguishing between design objectives and quality. If this is the design intent, they may be produced exactly as designed. The design intent for G20 may vary from G01 as knowledge evolves or different engineers are involved. However, if the plant is not producing to the specifications, then it could be a quality issue.

Let's face it, water that passes the little seals on window sills when closed or especially with slightly open even slightly needs to go somewhere...and that's where it goes.

Seal them up if you wish and then report back on the "mysterious sloshing" sound you hear......LOL

If you put two dots (eyes) on the upper portion, you can make it look like a dolphin!

Yeah, these drain holes are practical but annoying after a wash and dry. Unlimited water drainage. Same goes for the trunk and the side mirrors.

Car is nice and dry...come back 20 mins later to find water dripping down the sides!
