U.S. Emissions Warranty Question

*This question applies to United States residents*

Has anyone here gone through the process of activating the federal emissions warranty for their x3/x4?

I brought my 2019 x3 m40 with 51,000 miles (year and mileage important) into the dealership yesterday to get my active grilles repaired (under warranty) and while my car was there they said my car was throwing a low efficiency code for the catalytic converter. They quoted me at $4600 for a new cat installed. I told the service manager she was out of her mind if she thought I would pay that as opposed to just buying a 3rd party catted downpipe and having my indy shop install (I live in a emissions county, need cats). Then I remembered reading about the EPA mandated emissions warranty on vehicles in the U.S. - 2years/24,000 miles for all emissions related parts, and 8 years/80,000 miles for 3 specific components, one of which is catalytic converters. This applies to any car, whether you bought it new or used, do your own maintenance or not a dealer does, all cars are covered. I did a quick online search and found the EPA document that outlined this federal mandate and showed it to my service manager - she seemed shocked and couldn't tell me if my car was covered. She then went to make a phone call for about 10 minutes then came back saying "we need to confirm if the federal warranty applies to your car or not, we'll be contacting BMW corporate on this matter."

Has anyone gone through the process of activating this federal warranty? The EPA website is extremely cut & dry about coverage, but I can imagine that my dealership will try to squirm out of this. If anyone has any stories, even 2nd hand, please pass them along. I'm curious as to what my next few weeks dealing with BMW corporate will be like

Have you tried logging into bmwusa.com and checking the warranty info on your VIN? This is what mine shows. Clearly shows Federal Emissions 8yr/80k miles

Ah, very smart. Just checked and it shows I'm covered until December 2026. Sending a screenshot to my service manager now. Thank you!

Read the BMW warranty booklet. Seems like it’s covered to me.

As others have said, this is pretty straight forward. It sounds like the person you are talking to is either intentionally pretending not to know about the warranty for some reason or it’s their first day.

Primary and secondary cats and the ECU are covered under the Federal requirements past the normal B2B requirements.

I would get with the service manager and or Director and show them the Federal requirements and let them go from there. If they refuse to cover it then I would open a case with BMW USA along with the EPA and let them contact the dealer.

I suspect that once they see the language and requirements and once the dealer hears from BMW that they are indeed a covered item under the warranty they will cover this just fine.

Or double dipping. Turn into BMW, and charge the customer. I'd make sure the Sales Manager knows of this error, that isn't just an accident IMO.

Following up on this:

I've called and emailed my service manager multiple times to try to get this process started. Crickets on their end. Looks like I'll be escalating and going to BMW corporate.

Jealous of all you folks that live in areas with multiple BMW dealerships, I'm suck with a single, crappy one where I live.

It looks like you are in DC? Or maybe you used to be? There are several dealers in the area but I'd be happy to connect you with my SA at BMW of Sterling or my contact at Passport.

Good luck...

Whoops, I guess I forgot to update my location - I used to be located in DC but now live in Southwest VA, specifically the Roanoke area. If I can't get my issue rectified in my area I may take you up on the contact info for someone up north, thank you
