My Bolt Broke Too

BMW Service Center confirmed my suspicions yesterday that my bolt on the dif has also broken. They said this was the first time they had ever seen that happen. I will send them a link to this thread.

What symptoms were you seeing which lead to your suspicions and to your decision to take it in for evaluation, Travisbach2381? Tempted to have mine looked at as I have done a fair number of runs at the Strip, but not sure exactly what I should be looking for as far as signs/sxs. [I've read about the 'clunking sound' at low speed and in forward/reverse, but is that only heard when the bolt is completely sheared or are their warning signs of a bent bolt before it goes?]

This issue is a hot topic on the Facebook pages:

https://m.facebook.com/groups/X3X4M/...ibextid=9R9pXO

That additional bushing(?) seems to be a solid component to help alleviate the bending/shearing. There was also a stronger bolt developed that is for sale, but I don't have the time to dig through the posts for it at the moment. They're currently testing it on a 1000hp setup.

Kinda sad we (the X3/4M community) have to develop and fix these issues, but I suppose it's better than shelling out big bucks to fix expensive stuff that could break.

This issue has been resolved by the community.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive, there is a front bushing being developed.

It's pretty sad that it took the community to develop a solution for a problem bmw chose to ignore on a 90k performance vehicle.

Sorry if I missed something, but is this thread for X3M/X4M owners who've modded/tuned their cars for more HP thus resulting with this issue or everyone including stock owners? Even further, do you think it's for all M owners in general? I'm reseaching for my next M right now and this is concerning. I plan on keeping my next M long term but don't plan on tuning (at least while under warranty). Appreciate your input. Thanks!

Stock vehicles are effected too, the X3/X4M are the main cars plagued with this issue.

While traveling through a parking lot after exiting my parking space I heard a loud bang from the rear of the car. After the bang it just felt like the car wasn’t tight anymore. There was movement when letting off the acceleration. Also began to receive Four Wheel Drive errors.

Is it a warranty claim?

Would love to hear more about a warranty claim for a car w/ a chip, etc.

Hello all, i noticed that Im getting shudderes from my X3MC when starting from an incline and when turning hard to the left or right (like making a really sharp left turn at a three way intersection) and when backing into my garage (inclined) there is a noticeable clunk i hadn’t noticed before. I even feel random shudders when driving, and i noticed a decrease in my MPG (our cars aren’t saving the planet, but i went from a 20 average to 17 with the same driving) Even my wife who knows nothing about cars except turning it on and steering, noticed this too.

I’m stock and under warranty, and will be taking it in to the service center to check out, but does this sound similar to what others have experienced with the Infamous rear diff bolt? And, is there anything in particular i should mention when i give the tech the car that make sure they check all potential issues?

If it is the bolt I’ll let BMW fix it, then I’m going to have a unicorn poop out an egg and REALLY fix it

Your issue is with the transfer case. Please take it to BMW and mention SIB 20 02 20
