"The trailer module is not intended to keep the vehicle level - the X3M has a traditional coil spring/damper suspension and not a rear air suspension like the X5 / X5M, so there is no adjustment of the suspension height that the trailer module could do. Instead, the module lets the rest of the car know when a trailer is attached so the rear PDC sensors and blindspot systems are deactivated, and helps to control the trailer swaying. "

OP is 100% correct about trailer module functions for the x3m. Have a comp and was considering stealth hitch but backed out due to concerns of rear sag (car is lowered w/ h&r).

Stealth wiring kit is more than sufficient for that.
I use it as well to tow a seadoo, utility trailers etc anywhere from 1000 to 3000 lbs in weight.

Just have to remember to disable the rear cross traffic auto brake in the safety menu when you are towing something.

The full BMW harness retrofit was not worth it for what I use it for.

Already have that disabled. Anything else I should be aware of before making the plunge?

That's it. You just need a way to mount the actual harness plug - I used this generic mounting bracket - https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...k/HM40978.html

I have it mounted via one of the existing screws on the bottom of the bumper - I did not use the self-tapping screws included. When I'm not towing - I just unbolt it and zip-tie it up in my bumper. That way only the receiver itself is visible.

Thanks for taking the time to write this thread! I have been reading through some of the comments and I'm not sure if people are trying to be helpful or just trying to find a reason why the x3m shouldn't tow

Anyway, I'm on my third bmw now and I have installed towbars on my last two bmw's, in order to tow my bikes to and from the track.🙂 . A 320d and the f40 m135i.

Now its time to install one on the x3m thanks to the zf torque converter. Not sure when I will do so, but will post some pictures here once installed.

Prior to purchasing my X3M, I did a lot of research regarding towing with the X3M and couldn't really find that much helpful information. Previously, I had a Jeep GC SRT (tow capacity of 7,200 lbs) and was a bit nervous as to how the X3M would compare, especially when there is no factory-offered tow package in North America.

For my X3M, I went with a draw-tite hitch, and the plug/play OEM trailer harness retrofit kit and module. As much as I love the look of the stealth-hitch, the fact that you are limited to a pre-set receiver drop height was unsettling to me. OEM part numbers were:
-harness retrofit kit: 71-60-2-458-028
-trailer module: 63-11-5-A05-6D0

After install, I had the trailer module and all factory trailer coding done by codemybimmer remotely.

This weekend, I finally had the chance to put the X3M to the test. I just picked up a new boat (19 foot Yamaha 195S, est weight on trailer/full tank of gas was 4,000lbs) and towed it for little over an hour on windy, hilly back country roads from the Marina to my cottage (that's Canadian for lake house).

The X3M did a fantastic job with the load. I was worried about the lack of low-end grunt vs the 6.4L Hemi in the SRT, but I had no issues accelerating from a dead stop or a roll. The X3M was actually more comfortable with the trailer on the back than my SRT was - as much as people love to criticize the X3M's harsh ride, the SRT was even harsher. The rear end does have a little squat under load, which is normal, but kills my hope of fitting an MSS kit.

Overall, I was so impressed [...]
i have KWV3 coils on right now and also a stealth hitch kit… any idea if the coils can handle towing dirt bikes and 2 ATV’s? hard to find any info anywhere

Are you able to post a picture of the hitch area in the rear where you would connect the electrical between the car and trailer? Would like to understand how you were able to pair the bmw wiring harness with the drawtite hitch. Any help here would be greatly appreciated as I’m hoping to do the same.

Tongue weight gents and ladies.

4,400lbs is what then F97/G01 are rated for.

I can't remember, but tongue weight rating might be limited to 300lbs.

It won't matter until it matters. The X3M is a torque monster. Whatever "it" is, the X3M will tow it.

Will it stop it? Will it be able to keep it in-line under an evasive maneuver? Will your insurance deny coverage and leave you on the hook for the X3M, whatever "it" is AND whatever else you damaged?

Those are the questions.

Unfortunately don't' have any photos handy, but I am just using a universal 2-hole trailer bracket (look up Pollak HM40978). It simply attaches with two screws - I re-used one of the existing mounting holes from the rear bumper cover, and fabricated another "clamp". When I'm not towing, I just un-bolt the whole thing and zip-tie it up out of the way behind the bumper cover.

Thank you! I plan on pulling a 3200ish E46 M3, a little heavier, but not by much...

Overall, I was so impressed by how well the X3M did with a trailer - it blows my mind that BMW NA doesn't offer a factory tow package when it can tow so well. I would have no qualms recommending the X3M to anyone who needs to tow something of this weight/size.

I've been mulling over the idea of ordering a 2023 LCI - but I've read that some of the LCIs don't have the trailer prep wiring (S8SL I believe). Can anyone confirm?
I have a stealth hitch system on my '21 x3m! Seeing you tow a boat is super cool... Most I ever got loaded up was 2 ATV's! I recently blew a fuse in the rear and I've been try to figure out why... Does the hitch system you have hide away like the stealth hitch when not in use, or is it always visible? I also saw your note abt the MSS springs...! I am currently on KWV3 coil overs all around... I was super nervous about towing with it as there is ZERO info or advice regarding it. I just upped the stiffness a bit and prayed for the best! lol. Only towed by BIGTEX 30SA trailer with a Yamaha raptor 700r ATV loaded up. Car felt perfectly fine under this load with the coils.

My '21 is lowered with KWV3's! I had the stealth hitch system installed before lowering the car so I went into it just praying for the best.. I tow a BIGTEX 30SA trailer with my Raptor 700r ATV loaded up... So far haven't has any issues and car has performed fine... Only thing was a blown fuse that didn't allow any trailer lights to work. I was scared it was a wiring issue but after finding the blown fuse in the rear, hopefully it was as simple of a fix as that!

Too lazy to read though the thread on my phone so sorry if this was posted already.

I was playing around with the cameras on my 2020 X3MC and noticed they have a tow hitch view which zooms in on the tow hitch area.

Pretty cool.

Just installed the stealth hitch with wiring harness and picked up my new 22” boat. Complete install took maybe 2-3 hours with wiring harness included. Very easy. Trailered boat 40 miles on highway with no issues. I read the X3M is rated for 5500lbs so I opted from 195S to AR220 😅

That's a pretty nice boat man & it looks cool. I read the tow limit was 4,400 lbs. Bit I could be wrong & who knows, maybe the LCI model got a slight bump in this regard (towing capacity).

The 4,400lbs was on the X3. Did a lot of searching and everything I found was that the X3M was rated for 5,500lbs. I was nervous when I first took off with the boat but after 20 miles of highway the nerves settled down. Car has been driving fine since so I think it managed the weight pretty well.
