bowers and wilkins bimmercode in x3 reviews

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Thinking of coding the bowers and wilkins sound profile into my m40 with harmon kardon, but looking for some reviews before i do it. From what i can tell in the app its permanent without loading a backup which i dont think i have. Personally im so far mostly happy with HK altho would prefer a bit more bass, especially on rock/alt tracks. EDM seems to be fine IMO. Not really wanting to do the bavsound or alpha one. Looking fro reviews from those that have done it and if you can tell a difference or if its worse/better, etc. Ive searched and found reviews on how to code it for x3 but not so much on the sound performance specfic to the HK in the x3s. Thanks in advance.

I know I saw one post that said they didn't care for the added profiles, and that the stock HK profiles seem to be/sound better…. But I'm not sure I can find that thread. Will attempt to look for it this week during downtime.

I considered it for a hot min, then abandoned it. To be honest, a year into ownership, I think the HK is fine. You just have to find the right settings. I came from a Macan with the Bose setup, and I think the HK is actually "cleaner" than the Bose was… just not maybe as loud. But loud is subjective.

Yea for what it is i actually dont really mind the HK. Doesnt bother me enough to want to rip up the seats and do the ghost subs.

I have coded it in and in my opinion it made it a bit better, not night and day difference, but at least now music that I listen (prog rock/metal) doesn’t sound way “off”. Overall HK speakers in m40 is not really that good and you cant miraculously turn it into real b&w just by running their dsp.

I did it on my M4 and thought it was a definite improvement, but read this...

When you change with BC to BW a backup is created automatically. Advice - make just that one change and then see if you like how it sounds. I made multiple changes and when I reverted back all of my other changes we're overwritten by the backup restore.

The BW looked "cool" but did not give me the same fullness across genres like SoundLogic7 found in HK settings. The profiles are a little hokey - concert, stage, auditorium, live etc. what you can't do is create your own EQ presets which is what I was looking for.

HK sound is better above 50% vol - very pleased with thump and clarity of highs. At low vol….meh … it just doesn't fill the cabin with any fullness. I am pleased overall and my system is almost always over 70%

Agree HK sounds great above 40-50% volume. I wonder if a better amp is all you need to make the HK great. Frankly, I don’t listen to my radio above conversation volume anyway.

It seems the amps, at least per bavsound, don't work with the HK. Perhaps there are other aftermarket ones that might?

Does anyone have any experience with taking a bunch of Bavsound like speakers to a local shop and the shop having any issues doing the work? As opposed to, "well, we could build this whole system for you which will be much better than those things you brought us..." I guess that's if you go to a car stereo shop as opposed to something more on just the garage side of things.

I think for now im going to leave it as be for now, not really wanting to mess with shit too much tbh. Plus the link above about how its less than intended by design. Good info tho for those searching this topic in the future.

Sound is very subjective, only you can decide which you prefer! There is no harm in trying, if you already have the bimmercode app you can always revert to the backup which is created before bimmercode makes the change.

thx for the replies but honestly just gonna leave it as is for now. Changing the memory settings for loudness upon restart in bimmercode and leaving it around 50% or more volume has actually improved the system strangely enough to where i dont notice anything lacking anymore.
