Why does my radio make a chime sound sometimes when I'm driving?

There I was, driving along the shores of Oahu, looking great in my spotless new-to-me X3. Then, a chime sound came from the speakers. It would repeat ever 60-90 seconds with no dash lights on. I turned off the radio and the sound went away.

Any thoughts?

Wild guess would be a speed alert function in the car. I have no idea if the E83 has it or how to turn it on/off.
