Auto High Beams

Hoping someone has some insight on this... I had a 2020 X3M Comp, and the auto high beams worked perfectly.

I have now moved to a 2022 X3M Comp, and the auto high beam function does absolutely nothing... is there an easy fix for this or do I need to bring it in to get it looked at?

I also noticed the lights don't turn at all when I turn the wheel, and I'm not sure if that's by design because there is such a wide throw already, or if there is some underlying issue.

Thanks in advance!

Mine work just fine. Are you sure that you have them turned on with the button on the left control arm on the steering column?

Sounds like it needs to go to the shop. Bmw should handle it for free.

My 21 the auto option doesn't work if the headlights are actually switched on and not in the auto position.

Yep! I'm on auto for the headlights, and then the button on the left stalk. The indicator light comes up saying it's activated. Guess I'm going to the dealer

Auto high beams are for high beams not the turning of the wheel

when you turn your wheel there is a light on the inside of your highlamp closer to grill that shoots left or right depending on what direction you have your steering wheel

so i never heard of the auto high beams have to do with anything with turning with the wheel

i could be wrong but this is what i know being with these cars for awhile now

I have read somewhere on the forums that for some unknown reason (probably chip shortage) the lights don't follow the curve as you turn the wheel. Instead they have some light that illuminates the corner. This is just sad. I had experienced the same stupid "feature" on the loaner I got last week which had adaptive led lights. Doesn't do half the work.
But if the high beam function doesn't work you should go and check it.

It is not a chip shortage issue.

It's the change from mechanical systems to a digital Matrix array where instead of one zone, it can dim multiple zones. This is a change for the entire lighting systems across manufacturers and not just BMW.

I have written it up somewhere on the forums, so let me just quickly grab the details.

Quote:
Starting with the G30/F90 LCI and G01/02/F97/98, they switched over to Matrix LED and Laserlights with Matrix technology (Gen 4 Laser). Note that the G30/F90 also can't be optioned with Laserlights in the US at this time.

Therefore the entire system is different compared to the systems used in the G20/80 and G05/F95 with their Laserlights which did not have Matrix technology (Gen 3 Laser). The older Laserlights also used mechanical swivel, while the newer generation does not have swivel at all due to the matrix technology and dims or brightens multiple zones rather than a singular zone.

No you're correct, those were two separate thoughts. On my 2020 the low beams mechanically turned with the wheel. On my 2020 the auto high beams also worked. On my 2022 I have neither.

From other comments it seems as if low beams not turning is normal, but the auto high beams not working needs to be addressed.

Appreciate the response though

On a positive note, I had no idea my 2020 had them. Just found them out by playing around tonight.
