My car has a phone number?

Reading the BMWUSA.com web site about my car and I came across this page.
Why would my car have a phone number? The note in the question mark says "Use this number, for example, when signing up for a WiFi Hotspot service. Note: It is not possible to dial into your vehicle using this phone number."

Your car has an internal phone that is used to connect to satellites for the BMW app, accident notification, Wifi, etc.

No worries. Same on all cars these days. That's how OnStar and all these services work.

My iPad with LTE has a phone number registered to it as well. Any device that has cell service has a number registered to it.

It's only a cellphone, not a sattellite phone.

Yes. It's a cellphone. But in order to access GPS or any other services for that matter all cell phones ping towers and then bounce the signal off of satellites.

No.

GPS is independent of cellphone reception and most cellphone towers are conected to a landline.

Thank you all for the replies. I was asking more about the number than the phone. I have Toyota and Mercedes with similar technology. But neither company's website announces that the car has a phone number. Another way that Big Brother can track our movements.

IF I recall you can access the phone number somewhere within the iDrive screen........but it's really not worth your time.....BECAUSE you can't receive calls on that number. It's ONLY FOR EMERGENCY (sending) CALLS. Just nice to know it's available but hope you never need it.

Hey there! That's actually a pretty cool feature of your BMW. The phone number is generated by the car and is used as a means for accessing the car's internet connection. It's used for things like signing up for a WiFi hotspot service, as you mentioned. It's not a phone number you can use to make calls or dial into your car, but it's still pretty neat. If you're curious, you can even use a phone number generator to create a fake phone number for your car!

Ever see a vending machine with a little antenna? It has a phone number also.
The number of devices out there is the reason we all have to do 10 digit dialing.

Soon to be even more digits...... I have friends who "communicate" with their refrigerators when away from home. LOL

I wonder if it receives spam calls, that would be hilarious, marketers calling a car?

Maybe the car would be more interested in the extended warranty than me.

A Fraulein answers the call and begs you to take the car out for a "rip."
