Semi-conductor shortage causing delays:(

Hi,

Just got a call from my garage saying they’ve received instructions from BMW HQ: due to the shortage of semi conductors, some options are facing longer delivery times. For my build , only 440 (front lumbar support?) was impacted and I was given the choice: let them remove the lumbar support (they received a new code for this, z88) and keep my estimated delivery time, or Keep the option and face an additional 10 weeks..

I’m not sure which other options are impacted. Anyone else got similar messages?

Selfish bit first: What stage is yours at and what were your expected build/delivery dates?

We had been given dates of week 8 build and week 12 delivery, but that has actually just been shifted forward to an expected delivery of 5th April. The car has been given a VIN and should enter production shortly.

We have lumbar (think it comes with m sport pro pack), so seems odd that we have just had this update today, unless we are ahead in the queue and got the last semi-conductors! Whether it's different because it is RHD, but that would seem odd? Unless we should expect contact about a delay too! We have most options ticked, so would expect to be hit by something!

I've seen in the news that this is impacting most auto manufacturers, BMW is not alone in this.

Yes. GM is idling three plants.

Indeed, they did specify they were anticipating on possible delays...
Mine is scheduled for delivery end of May(Belgium) because I went for no delays 141 euro discount applied, for what it’s worth

Stupid question maybe - but could they retrofit? I mean it would probably cost a pretty penny but you get your lumbar support :-). The rationale being it's likely that whilst they haven't the parts for build, you may be able to nail some spares?

Lol I can imagine people looking surprised when you say you’re just inflating your lumbar support by using the hand pump in your €€€ car

I am having a similar experience as vincentjanv with an X3 M40i order placed on 18 Feb 2021. Currently, the order status is 111-Order Accepted at AG. On 5 Mar, I was advised by my dealer the order is being revised due to parts shortage.

Per a BMW bulletin released on 01 Mar, given to me by my dealer, the standard offer of sport seats with back width adjustment and lumbar support for both driver and passenger is being changed and limited to the driver only. (I have a copy of the bulletin but was not able to attach it to this post.)

What is not known is what parts are causing the shortage; what will be the delivered configuration of the passenger seat; will it be possible to retrofit the parts after delivery.

It would be nice to hear from any of you having additional information on this issue. My dealer has committed to getting answers to my questions; I may cancel the order depending on the reply.

What have been told to you is correct. In the German pricelist and configurator the Harman Kardon speaker system is also removed. And lumbar and bolster adjustment is limited to the drivers seat.

Also the lower end nav system with iDrive 6 and the 8.3" is having shortages but at the moment is still available.

Does anyone know which fab/what nm is driving these BMW delays? I thought the shortage was primarily in the 7nm range at TSMC.

I work at a semiconductor company and we've been running at 100% capacity to catch up with the demand.
It's not the semiconductor companies fault that there's a shortage. when covid hit, the companies that placed orders significantly reduced their demand for certain chips.

Yeah this sucks, but I actually think it's cool that BMW is able the give customers the option of modifying their order. I have an Audi on order since January and the same delays pushed my expected delivery date until June. If articles were to be believed, Audi (and others) had to defer a lot of their production into Q2, which matched up with the timeline my dealer was giving me.

That said, something happened along the way and the production date has steadily crept up and I've now been told that expected delivery is middle of April, so if you really want that second lumbar, maybe it's worth waiting. I can only imagine that the manufacturers are putting every resource they can on getting their supply chain back.

I also received notice for my order for an X3 M40i placed on 2/27. They removed the lumbar support, width adjustment on the passenger side, and all season tires. I had the 19" rim and they will now come with the summer performance tires. My wife (SAV for her) approved the changes.

Pretty unbelievable that they can't get all season tires. I might have to cancel the order if that happened to me. That means I'd be dropping another $1,000 for tires before the years up.

Really strange that the tires are problematic. Anyone knows where most of them are made? I would reckon not in China ?

[QUOTE=pnwzhp;27313613]I am having a similar experience as vincentjanv with an X3 M40i order placed on 18 Feb 2021. Currently, the order status is 111-Order Accepted at AG. On 5 Mar, I was advised by my dealer the order is being revised due to parts shortage.

As a follow-up to my 7 Mar post, my local BMW dealer advises they are not being given any detail information about the parts shortage. They also advise retrofitting the passenger seat with lumbar support and back width adjustment after delivery would not be economically feasible, nor is BMW NA willing to participate in such a remedy. Lastly, they do not know when parts will be available to reinstate lumbar support and back width adjustment for both driver and passenger front seats.

So, I have reluctantly cancelled my X3 M40i order, but found an X3 M40i very close to my preferred configuration, with full driver and passenger seat functionality, at a BMW dealer about 200 miles away. My local dealer has made arrangements for a trade and is waiving shipping. Happy ending for a frustrating experience.

I have a M40i in production right now...Genius line says it will be finished this Saturday, 3-20. When I placed my order on 3-1, my dealer told me there was an issue with Lumbar support parts. I asked to sit in a seat with and without the lumbar and honestly barely noticed any difference. I've had it on other cars and it's one of those things I touch once when it's new and then never mess with. The seat without adjustable lumbar felt fine so I went ahead a placed my order with the minor price discount.

However, I just checked my BMW tracker order form and lumbar support is listed on it still. Curious how the car will arrive. Will keep you guys updated.

Not to throw shade at the dealer, but mine advised that the Performance Center Delivery was no longer available. Yet here I am, flying out to Greer, SC, on April 5th.

jmaudi0, did the passenger seat w/o the bolsters and lumbar look visually any different from the drivers in any way? Like, were the bolster shape and lumbar area any different esthetically? Even minute details you noticed would be helpful as I am in the same boat as you. TIA
