My 2013 x3 with pro Nav also displays Chinese on the Nav unit but not head up display. Strangely models in Asian could have Chinese displayed on HUD too. Would be interested to find out how!

^ models in China and Hong Kong and certain other countries like Japan have a separate different Idrive software and hardware allowing for the different characters from the chinese and japanese language to display on both the idrive and speedometer and heads-up

I wonder if Chinese can be displayed on the HUD via a software tweak?

^ I am not sure but I know that the head unit is different because I tried to code a british BMW which was imported into hong kong to update the maps and found out in doing so that in order to put hong kong maps i had to replace the whole head unit because BMW has three different head units for different countries.
