Sport Exaust on Comp Explained

I've been curious to understand the differences between the standard and Competition package exhaust. The S58 technical manual provided me the answer.
https://www.bimmerpost.com/goodiesfo...S58-Engine.pdf

In short, aside from the black exhaust tips, there are minimal mechanical differences between the standard and sport exhaust. There are however functional differences in the exhaust gas flow path length that should make the sport exhaust louder. I've annotated the respective figures to show these differences in the attached image.

Specifically, the sport exhaust has a more restrictive flow path through the muffler when the bypass valve is fully closed. Ironically (if only slightly), the sport exhaust is probably capable of being slightly quieter when the valve is closed.

To compensate for this increase in back pressure through the fully muffled path, the sport exhaust valve tuning modulates the valve position more precisely, e.g. for intermediate loads when in "quiet mode" to optimize back-pressure for fuel economy and/or performance. The tech manual mentions this:

Quote:
In contrast with the exhaust flaps on the standard exhaust system, the exhaust flaps of the M Sport exhaust system can adopt intermediate positions. Therefore, it is possible for the exhaust flaps to be continuously variably adjusted to any position.
Whereas the standard exhaust valve can either be fully open or fully closed. Sport exhaust also gets a different augmented (fake) sound program.

This may have already been posted. If so, apologize.

I have the non comp F97 and put the comp muffler on it-you can 100% hear the difference. Paired with the Dinan mid pipe, it’s just the right amount of noise, for now lol.

I really like the exhaust on my comp. It is loud when it needs to be, and I can quiet it down when I don't want to hear the noise.

I'm actually surprised it sounds as good as it does for a 6 cylinder (no where near my SUV with a V8 and JBA headers though - which were installed due to OEM manifolds cracking).

Though it seems a lot of posters want the exhaust REALLY loud. For me it is perfect and wouldn't change a thing.

Edit - this only applies to AFTER I disabled the stupid ASD.

Is yours an LCI? How do you disable the ASD on the LCI models? I'm finding mixed info.

Please provide a link if you can find it again. I've been itching to disable ASD from the very start since the fuse-pull doesn't work on LCIs

Great thread! I got an amazing deal on a non-comp but every day I feel like I'm missing a little something from the exhaust. What's fascinating is the differences in the valve operation...that's not something you can compensate with via a new exhaust. Admittedly, these differences between comp/non-comp make the comp more desirable.
