I'm really worried about this wind noise issue now. Do we know if the source has been identified and a fix worked out?

Adding my name to the list too. Will mention it to dealer during first service visit scheduled for next week.

This sounds almost recall worthy since some people are encountering it so much more than others.

I can imagine How frustrating that must be. Just took delivery of my UK spec M40i and the main source of noise on my particular one seems to be coming from the 20" Pirelli P Zeros that came as standard. Hoping to swap them out soon. Other than that the acoustic glass seems to be doing a pretty good job at of keeping wind noise down. I hope you guys get the problem sorted.

I hear the wind noise as well. Just over my left shoulder. I tried pulling in the mirror while driving to see if it was the mirror and noticed no difference. I think it is a seal or lack of proper sound absorbing.

Did the extra weatherstripping make any difference?

I drove 6 different cars today at an event and my wife and I were very conscious of wind noise, we both kept checking a window wasn't down. It WASN'T a factor on an X2, X5 or X6, but WAS present on 2 out of 3 X3's we drove. The one without wind noise was driven at a range of speeds including freeway.

It does seem like there's a design and QA issue at play here on the X3. In our case it was on both driver and passenger sides. Luck of the draw in terms of delivery, but hopefully BMW are realising there's a pattern forming and working on a fix.

One factor I should bear in mind though is that the cars ARE very quiet in terms of tyre/road/engine noise compared to what I'm used to (mainly engine) so if it wasn't for the fact that one X3 (a 30d with 20" run flats) didn't seem to have much wind noise, I could nearly believe that all cars have it but the other noises cover it up. In real life, I'll never hear it anyway as I have to crank the music to drown out the kids squabbling.

After 2 weeks I can say that I do not have any problems with the nouse or what so ever.
Also drove a new G30 yesterday and this had the same level of noise as mine G01.

Both of them are quit as I may say so

I have had mine a couple weeks now and it definitely has the wind noise. It's been really windy here for about a week, so not sure if that is contributing a lot or not. But at highway speeds I definitely hear it. It's not as loud as say, our Honda Odyssey is on the highway, but I expect better. It does almost sound like the top of the window on driver's side versus the mirror...not the sunroof for sure. Would love to know if there will be a fix for it.

I’ve complained about wind noise earlier on this thread. Had my M40i in to check a few things earlier this week and took a ride with the shop foreman, who thought my noise was normal. I should add that I still think it not normal but I was impressed with the guy nevertheless and don’t think he was just giving me the standard first line of defense bull. If enough of us complain, and keep complaining, maybe BMW will pay attention.

Wonder if someone could start a poll or spreadsheet so it could be logged to see if patterns are noted (production date, wheel size, etc). May end up being totally random and unrelated to any variable, but seems across the board yet not all inclusive so far. FWIW, we don't have a wind noise issue - Oct 2017 build, M40i, 19" performance Yokohama RFTs.

We don't have a wind noise issue either. Rock solid with without rattles or gremlins. As Max Well stated, maybe the issue could be narrowed down to a specific manufacturing window. OP could edit thread or ask a moderator for help.

Week 44 (October 2017), M40i, Adaptive M Suspension, 20" 699M with Pirelli PZero RF Max Performance Summer (OEM).

If your question about weatherstripping was to me, then I'll answer: yes, it made quite a difference. If the original wind noise was a 10, then with the weatherstripping, it reduced the noise to a 2 or 3.

I applied the weatherstripping in a fairly cold garage, so the adhesive didn't stick all that well. I took it off a while ago because it was getting all screwed up every time I opened the door to get in/out. I will reapply a different set that I bought once it warms up a bit more here in MN.

I plan to only apply it to the upper part of the frame - basically from where the mirror is up and over to where the b-pillar starts. I'm not sure if I'll bother going down the b-piller to the latch, but I may. Most of my noise is coming from the leading edge, between the mirror and top of a-pillar area.

Oh, and my car is a M40i, built in Dec 2017, running on 19" Blizzak run flat winters. I'll soon swap out to my Bridgestone 21" for the summer, but it's not tire noise.

A very quick note of cautious optimism: I picked up my 30d today and doing nearly 200km on that same freeway where I'd tested other X3s (2 of 3 were wind noisy) and then my new Subaru Impreza (very quiet) on the weekend, I can say that my X3 seemed pretty quiet. Not silent but the noise I could hear wasn't making me think a window was down, it seemed like an acceptable external sound for a big car doing 110 k/h in wide open windy areas. I needed the music off to hear anything.

I've got a 6 hour freeway drive tomorrow so will be listening out, but I think my car seems to have come through 'good'. Built 25-28 Feb, and the only option I think relevant to highlight is that I added the 'acoustic glass'.

Good to hear - although you've got acoustic glass which I won't have! Enjoy the new car!

Adding my name to the list now!

UK G01, MSport 2.0d with acoustic glass!

Didn't pay much attention to it until I read the forum and then thought "ahhhh that's the noise".

If the noise I heard in other X3s is same as everyone else, what a few of us described as thinking a window isn't up properly, the acoustic glass wouldn't have been able to cover it up really.

I suppose we all need to try and get a good sound recording that captures what we experience. I'll try and do the same on my drive - presumably without the noise if yesterdays drive is representative. What I'll also try and do is put the window down a TINY bit and perhaps someone will see if the buffeting that makes I what they have all the time.

We have the wind buffeting sound around the A pillar area, especially on a gusty day. For us, it seems to be above 65 mph that it is noticeable.

I am tempted to install the acoustic glass. My local BMW shop is willing to make the swap.

I see Sheps11 has noise with the acoustic glass - any others? Obviously I don't want to spend $600 + labor and it not make a difference.

I have acoustic glass installed in my M40i. There is no wind noise when driving with speed up to 160 km/h. Hope this helps.

Mine’s a UK spec M40i with the acoustic glass and absolutely no issue with wind noise. The tyres are noisy but there is no real wind noise at all.

Where’d you order it from?
