If you're not getting close to the window sticker mpg with your 4 banger, either somethings wrong with your car or you're not driving efficiently (jack rabbit starts and hard stops) aka the binary driver. And if you're crawling in the city, don't expect to get much mpg. It takes a lot of energy to get a 4200 lb vehicle up to speed from a dead stop, so taking off quickly will suck up the petrol. There are many techniques to improving mpg and racing to the next red light is not one of them.

Not that this is an apples to apples comparison, but I average 22 mpg with my x35i in mixed driving and up to 30 mpg on a flat highway <70 mph, but driving it hard (less efficiently) the mpg drops substantially.

I just orded new fuel injector I'll put them on to see if it will help. I can't stand with driving one mile and losing about 5 miles of range it's going to cost me more in the long run.

The range thing is pretty meaningless. It calculates based on what you did recently. Jump on the highway and it will go up instead of down. Go by what it says your mpg is not the range.

But my mpg is pretty bad too, I used ISTA to do a rough running test cylinder 1 and 4 value was higher than cylinder 2 and 4. Cylinder misfire counter showed cylinder 1 had 3 misfire so that suspect me something is not right with the fuel system. When I engage to drive with break applied the front seat vibrates like massage chair if I had AC on(higher rpm) then the vibration goes away.

It's posts like these that make me grateful I'm averaging 33+ MPGs without having to watch my speed. I wanted an X3 for the AWD, but I waited until I found the right one for me: the oil burner.

replaced all 4 injectors today and they were cover with carbon at the tip. I realize the injectors probably wasn't seated all the way when I replaced valvetronic motor before because I don't have the special BMW tool. After installing new injector correctly the car is much smoother and I'm getting close to 25 mpg on highway and 21 in city.

Not that the 4 cyl isn't capable, it's just a lot to ask a little 2L engine to haul around an AWD 4200 lb vehicle where the 3L does it much more effortlessly, therefore the similar MPG.

BMW should have kept their non-turbo 3L for the base model in their heavier vehicles, but everyone is doing the 4 cyl turbo at the expense of higher maintenance costs of a turbo motor.

well, BMW lists the X3 35i as 19 city/ 26 highway and the 28i as 19 city/25 highway. So the only advantage to getting the 28i was the price is lower than the 35i...

Not sure what you are comparing here, I have a 2013 and the EPA ratings for the two engines that year where 2.0L 4cyl 21/28/24 (city, highway, combined) vs. 3.0L 6cyl 19/26/21.

I was quoting for the 2011 MY...

even the differences you quote for 2013 MY are not great

Agreed, even the 28i with a 4cyl, the difference in mpg vs the 35i is relatively small.

I took a look and for 2011, the xDrive28i was 6-Cyl, 3.0 Liter @ 240HP while the xDrive35i was 6-Cyl, Twin Turbo, 3.0 Liter @ 300HP

When I said the 2011 did not have a 4cyl, I assumed people would know it was only offered with a 6cyl, but thanks for taking the time to look it up and post your findings.
