US car hire

Any recommendations for car hire companies to either use or avoid?

We are looking to hire a mustang convertible or equivalent (not sure what the alternatives may be in the US) for a week or so in Vegas

Any experience in doing the same and what sort of prices you think we should be paying per day?

1. Enterprise Exotics
2. A metric shit ton

Car rental prices are triple or more from where they were a year ago.

Go to booking dot com or expedia dot com and put in your dates. These sites will give you prices from several car rental companies. I've used them for business and personal travel and usually get way better rates than if I go directly to a single car rental company. Right now, Las Vegas is $500 to $900 per week for regular cars. A Mustang convertible may be different.

Here's an idea for you to consider: You don't really need a car for the entire time if you are going to stay on the strip. You could rent a car just for the days you will be driving around. Its a lot cheaper and a lot less hassle.

Have fun!

All good:

Avis
Hertz
Enterprise

if you can’t find it with the above companies you don’t need it.

Thanks all, agree the prices look shocking to a few years ago. Sure we had an Escalade for 120 a day last time, now that gets you a mini!!

You think it’s better to pre book or is there still room to barter at the desk?

Just a word of caution about car rentals in the US and especially in Vegas. Your "reservation" for a specific vehicle is a pretty loosely interpreted term. I've had 2 occasions now were we booked a convertible (once in Vegas and once in Hawaii) where we got to the counter and they didnt have what we reserved. Their solution was to either give us a non-convertible or have us just sit there and wait until one possibly showed up. One other Vegas specific tip: You need to declare ALL drivers at the time of rental so that their ID can be recorded and they can be added to the rental policy. We were not aware of that and only my name was on the rental. My wife was driving when we returned the car. They caught that and added some bullshit "undeclared, non approved, driver" surcharge to our bill.

Prebook. I have no patience for such negotiations. How much price reduction would you expect prior to entering the negotiation? Do you have confidence a vehicle that meets your requirements would be available without pre booking?

I understand what your saying chassis, my fear is the scenario of pre booking and having detroadster’s experience of a loosely interpretation of what I’m expecting.

Do we still need international driving permits or is that a thing of the past?

Read the company policy on driving credentials.

What is your alternative to address the fear of not getting a vehicle to your liking? There isn’t one to my knowledge.

Example - at this moment I have an Audi A6 Avant booked in Europe this September. The booking says “or similar”. I want the A6 Avant. If I don’t get one…who cares? It doesn’t matter in the big picture.

Have used Avis before to get to Arizona and it's been okay. The rental is or similar in class so if you ask for a large sedan, that can be anything from a Genesis to a 5 series. Make sure you thoroughly inspect the car for pre-existing damage. Return it with the same or higher amount of fuel. A damage waiver is worth it to avoid big insurance bills. Otherwise you could be liable for $1000's. Depending on where you are driving there might be a charge like if you cross a state. If there is a pre-paid charge meter by the rear view then make sure it's on. Else you could get stung with unauthorized charges by the rental company.

This Cautionary Tale Has Scared Me Off Renting A Car Through Turo For Good

I'd video the car's condition inside and out before and after.

I'm sure you can dig up a "cautionary tale" for anything... That shouldn't stop you. I've used Turo on so many occasions and have absolutely loved the service.

That being said, not sure if turo is an option for international driver permit.

There’s so much alternative transportation in Vegas, personally I would not rent a car unless it was an exotic for a day

I know several people that make a living off renting normal cars of Turo. They get a loan on a slightly used car and then make money on it. The advantage of Turo is you are getting that exact car with no games. Your personal car insurance will almost certainly NOT cover anything you do while driving it so be sure to check with your agent and then buy the appropriate coverage through them.

Thanks all, will see what is available on the day as it seems a prebook will yield the same results with no guarantee of a company having what we would prefer.
Alamo confirmed a Buick cascada is an alternative to a mustang…

If you can fit this into your schedule, I highly recommend it:

Since they took over Exotics Racing. It used to be better, when it was the inside track on the actual Speedway. I simply couldn't "see" the private track the last time I was there. Never had an instructor have to grab the wheel, but the last time he did 3 times

The track is technical, so get one of the Porsche . . . You're welcome.
