Oil Consumption Normal?
Hey all, did an oil change on 2017 N55 X3 (80,000 miles on the odometer). I put in 7 liters, drove 5,600 miles and 6 liters came out. So I consumed one liter in 5600 miles. Wondering what you guys are seeing on your N55 with higher miles. I used Pentosin 5w-30.

I have owned my car brand new since 2014. N55 version without hot weather oil cooling. I have never put oil in the engine to top off after an oil change.
Have you looked for leaks, smoke, and checked the intake tract to see if there is heavy residue??? X3's, in general, do not take the beating that the F30 with n55 takes, and thus having a car that consumes oil the way you are describing yours is not normal I believe. Try to find out where this oil is going. Last edited by MSport_Jon; 08-19-2022 at 04:39 AM.. |

Oil use can vary a lot depending on the engine type, driving sytle (city vs. highway), etc. You're use of a quart/liter in 5K or so miles is not by any means unheard of. You might find some stated usage figures from BMW if you do some Googling- but again you should expect to find quite a variance/wide consumption range

You should never add 7 liters off the bat. You add only 6 and go measure the oil with your iDrive or with ISTA. If it's full, you are good, if it's under full add 1/4 of a liter at a time. Overfilling is not good. Also, when you drain the engine oil, you really can't get it all out. There are parts of your oil circuit where gravity has no effect. |

During an oil change, it is normal for less oil to be drained out. The filter absorbs probably a third to one half of a liter.

Snippet from Consumer Reports….I believe the very high usage numbers are associated with motors in BMW "M" cars

Are you the original owner?
If so, how many miles between oil changes? If not, do you know the history of how many miles between oil changes? With BMWs condition based oil service, they could go +-15k miles, which IMHO is way too long and could lead to premature cylinder wall/ring wear causing excessive oil consumption. Also, pushing the engine hard and often, especially when new, can lead excessive oil consumption. I perform oil changes in the 7.5k mile range to reduce the chance of premature engine wear. My N55 uses less than 1/2 a liter between 7.5k mile oil changes @78k miles. A defective crankcase ventilation system and or bad turbo seal can cause excessive oil consumption. |
