Aspects I did not expect to see from your video.
An out and out ballsy drive with red line gear changes and windshield face plant breaking, and pushing the X3M to absolute limits for the given road and conditions.

The odd glimpse of your tach had you between 2-4k rpms , demonstrating what an ideal road for a real world "run in" process.

Good skills mate .. the music suited the cruise so well
Very kind - thanks!

Perhaps my choice of title did set some unrealistic expectations. I think the stabilized gimbal I had suction cup mounted to the roof made the ride seem more tranquil than it actually was.

Very true John, and your substantive feedback rings so true that both photographs and videos do not really give a true representation of "reality" as experienced "in the flesh"

keep 'em coming John, your are keeping me going (amongst others) with your great content, until my MBB X3MC arrives towards the end of the year.

To also be fair on the speed, had he gone much faster I would surely have thrown up on him from over in the passenger seat. It was borderline as it was at the speed we did.

That looks fun. I remember when I did it in my M3. Perhaps another trip up is warranted now that I have the X3MC.

I don't think you're going that slow. Just looking at the speedometer and comparing to PDR stuff I see people post of their Vettes on that road. Yes they're a bit faster but on those corners every extra MPH is a good bit more lateral acceleration and there's a world of difference between feeling that in an X3M and a C7 or C8 Vette. Then of course there's just straight up Initial D hillclimbers that do their thing but that's a skillset that takes some focus and time/mistakes/$ to cultivate, haha.

Nice stuff and probably a lot of fun.

The grandkids must not be doing well in college. Sorry to hear that. When I drove it with my wife in her regular X3M, she was making some crazy sounds during acceleration and braking and screaming in the corners, scared to death. She would have fallen asleep during your ride.

"Daytona" John attacking the dragon tail, lol. With dubbed elevator music. Good one.

Where do you live Daytona? I'm in Atlanta. Let's meet up there after the leaves turn in a couple of weeks and drive it together. You can film me for a few seconds until I disappear around the first turn and leave you behind.

A bit harsh that Ironwood, new car , running in (sub 4k rpm) , which bit did you not understand?

Having just watched this : (FFS that road is evil)

I'd be disinclined to acquiesce to your request bud .. even if I lived over in the USA, and still had my Scooby STi 4

Well driven DJ you survived

I've driven the Tail of the Dragon, probably 50 runs, mostly 10-15 years ago with a group but get up there about every other year, not yet with the X3M, and my last time in an M2 Comp was hard rain, now that was fun!

With the cliff sides and lack of guard rails, it takes out a motorcycle or two every season. Back when we ran it twice a year, we ran so hard and got so confident, a friend totaled his 645Ci. A one second lapse in concentration, his back end went off in a hard corner, He then slid off, dropped a front tire in a ditch and smacked the passenger side into the hillside. He was OK but the car was totaled. To run it hard takes 15 straight minutes of absolute concentration. Even more intense than most track days. Bottom line, stay in your lane and stay within your comfort level. No need to insult a first timer for learning the car and the road.

You guys are right. Totally my fault. I apologize to Daytona John. I didn't realize you were still running it in.

I certainly didn't run the length of it hard either, maybe half a mile or so. I was just getting used to how very late you can brake before a hairpin when my wife finally got out some real words. She yelled "Don't hurt it" as I accelerated out of a turn and I slowed down. The rest of the drive was like DJ's or maybe a little faster.

So I just did 3 runs on the Dragon. Kept up with a hard running Cayman for a while too. Passed a slowpoke Vette too. But my GoPro had an SD card error and not a single video took . Ugh. At least I’ll have photo evidence once I get them from US129 Photo

So who else was on the Tail of the Dragon, Friday 10/22? US129 Photos got a 2nd white X3M, not long after me. With 21's and a front plate (possibly Missouri) so definitely not me! But here are a couple of proofs of my runs.

The Dragon's Tail looks like a fun ride! It reminds me of a road near my location that's a blast to drive up or down. You gotta mind your p's and q's though! No mistakes allowed.
