Any idea what could have happened?

I was just casually waiting to pick up my kid and sat in the car for a bit (20minutes) and when I get out, I am not able to lock it now. :

To be clear: I've have tried to get back in, start engine then turn it off again. Nothing seems to work…

Funny you say that. When I was in Germany my wife and I came across a young couple in a BMW 3 series with a brand new baby stopped in a rest area. They had stopped because the baby needed to be fed and now their car would not start. He got in to show me and I looked around and whispered to him, as not to embarrass him in front of his wife, You have the car in drive, put it in park and I bet it will start. Sure enough they were shortly on their way.

I hear ya, my previous car had the MDCT which you could leave in gear and power off. Took a while for me to learn to hit the P button before powering down the X4MC.

Found the reason!

Drivers side door was slightly opened. Lol, I've been so use to the soft close on the x5.
