2017 Timing Chain Caused Engine Failure
My mom's 2017 X3 suffered engine failure on 2/18/23 due to the timing chain snapping. It only has 58,323 miles and has regularly been serviced at a local BMW dealership. The warranty expired on 7/22 and we were quoted $15,600 + tax to have a new engine installed.
I contacted BMW of North America (BMWNA) customer relations to see if they would do anything to help cover the costs of engine replacement. Today I was told since we authorized the replacement BMWNA won't cover anything. |

My empathy with your situation.
The car is well maintained, but the engine is damage without warning sign. Any issues raised by BMW dealer who maintained the car, all these years? First time I read timing chain issue for 2017 F25, in this forum. You received a quote. However, BMW rejected because you authorized the repair. Has the repair been authorized? |

The repair was authorized while we were waiting on BMWNA to reach a decision. UPDATE: I emailed two executives last week after customer service rejected the claim. They have opened another case and have contacted the dealer to get a copy of the repair bill. |

For as much as a BMW costs new, and as much as maintenance and repair bills run, BMW and their dealers are really a cheap bunch. Good luck with getting that taken care of.

Hopefully, BMW look into your maintenance records that show you did everything they recommended. And they will provide some kind of good will to cover the cost.
I wish you best of luck. |

OP, did you stay on top of engine oil changes? not the dealer recommended interval, but 5000 mile oil changes? I make sure I change the engine oil before I pass the 5000 mile mark.
Do you use the start/stop function? I hear this can cause timing chain issues. Doesn't matter how busy I am, it gets done before 5000 miles. I am going to check the timing chain stretch before I decide to do the timing chain service job. |

I checked the timing chain on my dad's x3, it looks good, no slack, my buddy who is a master BMW tech also inspected it. Looks good but it's hard to tell, but it looks good for now...
I am planning to get it changed soon... my x3 is at 163,000km (101,000miles) so it must be serviced soon. I did research on the N20 timing chain failures, it happens to x3's dated from 2011-2015, so it should not happen to the NEWER x3's. "The timing chain and components may be problematic on models prior to 2015" |

RESOLUTION: After emailing two BMWNA executives our case was reopened. BMWNA has agreed to a goodwill refund of $6,000. The check was issued by the dealer on their behalf.

But I am disgusted to read of the way you were initially treated. Just this week, I tried to get an update on the Canadian class action....as far as I know it was settled Stateside.....In Canada they extended your warranty on the timing chain/oil pump chain and extra 2 years....Thanks for nothing BMW Canada. So since Nov 22 in our case...no coverage. As time goes on I'm no longer the fan I was....so for the first time in many years...our next vehicle may not be a new BMW. But well done to you but they should have paid the whole thing. Last edited by Bilbofraggins; 08-25-2023 at 07:05 PM.. |

Did They Continued to Use a Defective Chain?
Quote:
Was already planning to press a little harder on the price as 50k on a timing chain (oil gets replaced every 5k) seems insane, but I'm wondering if I should press really hard or contact BMWNA directly. Thoughts (and maybe prayers lol) appreciated. When they said I could consider a trade in I told them I didn't think I'd want another BMW considering this and the engine replacement. |
