G01 HU (head unit) removal
Hi,
First time posting on the forum, so please help me with the jargon when possible. I am looking to some instructions for removing the headunit on my G01. I purchased the car without Advanced Bluetooth, therefore the car did not come with a WiFi antenna. Installing the WiFi antenna should allow me to enable CarPlay which will get patched in over a computer hooked into the car via a ENET cable. I have searched YouTube and could only find vids for 2014 3 series etc. I assume that once I remove the trim (using a trim tool) that I will be able to remove the screws holding the HU in place, but I would really appreciate a detailed steps so something does not fall into the bowels of the car. I did find the previously posted threads for this but they are filled with broken links and different cars. I also do not want to just assume all BMW HU are the same (please tell me if I am wrong). Cheers. |

You seem to be drawing a direct relationship between Enhanced Bluetooth and WiFi antenna. I don't think the relationship is so simple. For example, does your car have option 6CP (APPLE CARPLAY PREPARATION)? If so, you already have the required WiFi antenna, even if you don't have Enhanced Bluetooth. Did you enter your VIN here: https://www.bimmer-tech.net/compatib...ay-activation/

If your goal is to have Apple Carplay, then check your vin for the preparation as suggested. If enhanced bluetooth is what you're after, you don't need the antenna for it. It's just coding (minus the second microphone).

Hi OP, did you do this? I’m in the same position. The VIN check page says I have the required hardware but according to my dealership, I don’t. When I try to connect CarPlay, I get a failed to connect error message

While I don't know much of anything about what features are enabled by what options, here is a HOWTO that includes instructions on head unit removal:

After searching all over this forum the past few days, using some of the help on this post and others to figure it all out, I was able to remove the head unit and install the WiFi antenna to go along with the Apple CarPlay coding (including widescreen).
I am new to the BMW community, but have been on and off forums since about 2003 in various car communities. I have never had much to contribute, but now that I am in the position, I would like to provide the one thing that I was unable to find after searching here and all over the web: BMW X3 G01 Head Unit Removal / Apple CarPlay WiFi Antenna Install. I uploaded the post to Imgur in hopes that it won't get taken down like the last one, but time will only tell. If it does get taken down, please send me a message and I will be happy to send you a zip file of the post. (Taken straight from Imgur's "Download Post" option) Here is the link: View post on imgur.com Just joined the community two weeks ago with a 2018 X3 M40i with 30k miles on it. Loving the car so far! |
