Does it only happen on cold starts? If it happens on all starts, try to get someone to help you pinpoint it (starting the car again if you need to). Some component of the exhaust is the most obvious culprit.

It only happens first thing in the morning that I have noticed. It’s a very new noise though and occurring while I am out of town (700 miles away from home). Hopefully nothing that’ll be problematic when I head home. But this vehicle has not been good to me the past year.

Yes. I'm weird about the protective films. I haven't removed them from the M badges in the headrests, the instrument cluster, nav/media display, etc. It was only a few months ago that the airbag label sticking out of the glove compartment was removed...

It's not super cold here, 30 degrees overnight and 40 when I started the car. But I haven't been parking in a garage since I am out of town. Maybe that's why I am noticing now.

Should I even bring this up to the dealership? It might be a "normal sound" like the tractor sounding engine or the clunk noise when turning, backing up, etc. due to the summer tires. I for one never had the noise with summer tires in the winter when I was running Michelins on my previous M3 and M4, but the stock Continentals suck anyways. I have been getting very spooked lately when I hear the noise - thinking I hit the curb, or hit another car backing out. |

Doesn't seem normal to me but if it makes the sound for only a short period of time and doesn't seem to affect anything, I'd probably just live with it vs dealing with having dealership spend time on what they might eventually call "normal".

Noticed mine also do this the last two days when on startup but we have very cold weather the now with snow so i would agree it’s something to do with cold weather on start up. It sounds like a belt slipping if i was to take a guess. If it stays once the temp goes back up i will take to dealer to get it checked.

Oil pump has been known to make noise at extremely cold temperatures. Usually at startup though. The noise itself is normal though and not considered a defect.

I had this repaired under warranty. It took a little over two weeks, but they ended up replacing the alternator belt tensioner, alternator, and lower idler pulley. The noise is now gone, both at idle and cold start, according to the service invoice I just received. I’ll pickup my vehicle tomorrow.
