what to do about breakin

So I've got ~300 miles on the new ride already, but I have a ~1,200 mile road trip coming up next weekend. I'll do my best to get to at least 900 before then to be able to have the breakin service done before I go, but it may not be possible given work and lack of commuting for the time being.

How big of a deal is it to do the 1000 mile service at 1500? Sales guy said something about how it's not a big deal to me (I'm leasing), but they won't be able to certify it on lease return which hurts them. Not sure how to interpret that...

I think I have an M3 problem.

I tried to make an apt for mine once it hit 1100mi but due to COVID, couldn't get an apt for a few days. At that point it had 14xx. I would imagine it makes more of a difference in how you drive in those first miles than the exact number. I'd say go before your trip if you're close tho (between 1k and 1200)

I believe the CPO process allows for some variance in the 1200 mile window, maybe check with your service advisor.

Too much variation among dealers. For its worth, I was told by my SA in Maryland that you can be about 100 under or over.

When I scheduled mine. The SA told me 200 miles on either side of 1200 was ok

I seriously doubt anything bad will happen to the car if you are over on the break-in service. Assuming you are not redlining all the time.

OP - That said, can you schedule the appointment at a dealership near your destination?

Yeah -- I'm not worried about something outright bad happening, moreso about BMWNA giving me the middle finger should something go sideways in the future.

I thought about it -- going hiking in TN, so while I probably _can_ find a dealer to do the service there (near Gatlinburg), it seems silly.

Grayson BMW in Knoxville would be the one in that area.

I get what you are saying about bad things. The sales manager, sales person, and service manager all emphasized about hitting the time very close to the defined mark for the break-in service. This bunch never says anything and are very laid back. It was unusual enough that it caught my attention and I have dealt with them a lot over the last 7 years. No recommendations/suggestions like that ever.

yeah, just got a confirmation of the same from my SA. called up and got a "you should really try to not go over, just in case"

as much as I love driving, working 700 miles in, in the next 5 days, is gonna be interesting.

My X3M loaner was 800 miles past break in service and they were going to do it when I dropped it off. I dont think BMW pays too much attention to this.

Exactly.
I sure as heck would not change my vacation/weekend/road trip plans around it. If you are over so be it. It's your car to drive and use.

The M genius at my dealership told me they will blacklist the car and deny warranty claims if it's not done in the proper mileage window but who knows if that's actually true.

There's an M5 that was denied a warranty claim since the owner went over his break service miles. I think it was 2000 miles over.
