Dimming Mirror

So I've noticed that the edge around the rear view mirror odoes not dim. It's pretty inoticeable when I'm driving. Just wondering if there is another mirror/option.

Thanks

Interior rear view…or the exterior (side) rear view mirrors? Got a pic?

On my f15 and f06 BMWs…I know the exterior side view mirrors have a thin border that does not dim. It really stands out if I open the garage to back out on a sunny day (or morning) where the garage is much darker than outside…the mirrors dim prior to putting the gear selector in reverse which makes the border that doesn’t dim stands out. When reverse is selected, the auto dimming turns off. For some reason I’m not remembering if the interior mirror has the same border that does not dim.

You can see the border in the pics below from my f06 that doesn’t dim…its the small area between the yellow highlighted lines:

The interior. Exterior mirrors I replaced with Euros and they're fine. The interior one has a huge gap between the dimming and not.

I think a picture would do more justice in explaining. There's a gap around the perimeter of the interior mirror too if I'm not mistaken, but I'm not going anywhere anytime soon to be able to take a picture lol.

You are correct. I'm always adjusting mine to keep car headlights out of the gaps

See the huge gap around the edge? It's like 1/4" and where the headlights always manage to find themselves... Kind of like the smallest gap in the sun visor and the sun.

Any help or ideas? New mirror out yet?

Looks awfully big ,MY18 doesn’t have that large of a gap around the perimeter of the interior rear view mirror.

I figured it was normal but I was reallllllly hoping there was a better version or that it was actually a bad batch or something else.

I wonder how much cheaper it was for BMW to go with the huge gap vs a nice thin line like they used to be.

Wouldn't surprise me if there was some regulatory reason for the border around the outside.

Either that, or a necessity for larger outer sealing area of the mirror parts so it doesn't short/burn out like dimming/heated mirrors tend to do after years.

Wow…that’s a big non dimming border…none of my older EC interior mirrors have a border that size.

Both our 2021's have that big border.

I just got my 2016 550i back, I'll see what it looks like.

My 2014 X1 isn't that large from what I remember.

I've had BMWs with this feature for years and never like this. Really odd. I wish we could figure out the method to the madness...

Anyone “testing” their interior rearview mirror (or even your side mirrors) a good way to test the EC function (auto dimming)…if you have a garage, if you are facing forward with the open garage door behind you on a sunny day…this can initiate some dimming of the mirrors that have the EC function (electrochromatic).

When you open the garage door with bright sunlight when you start the vehicle or press the START button, the dimming mirrors should start to dim. But DON”T put the transmission in reverse…doing so will cancel the autodimming.

In order for the mirrors to dim, the transmission must be in P, D, or N.
