Transmission noise at 70mph

Hi all,

I have a 2006 manual diesel which has recently started making a loud noise coming from underneath when it reaches 70mph. This noise then persists until you drop to 60mph. So it seems there is a trigger point of 70mph for something to start/engage and a trigger point of 60mph to stop/disengage. My mechanic has taken it for a test drive and has advised that he feels the issue is within the transmission. This makes sense as the noise is consistent, even in neutral while free-wheeling from 70mph+ and the handling doesn't feel any different.

Does anyone know what is being activated? What the issue is? Or have experienced the same?

Many thanks
Ben
