Why no 2020 review info?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Why is there so little information out there on the new engine on the 2020 X3/4M40i? Seems like it has been drowned out by the release of the new X3M/X4M’s?

The 2018-19 M40i reviews are generally very good, so is the 2020 same or better?

Same B58 as before with some minor changes and small boost to power, so reviews might be redundant? My 2 cents.

It's still the B58 engine, so nothing really new. Just a few small bits and an alleged power update which hasn't shown it to be any more powerful on a dyno.
It could just be a power rating change by BMW to list it closer to what its actual hp output has been.

It's a different engine. B58 TU. almost the same engine in the Supra. I suggest you read the B58TU book listed somewhere in this forum.

Exhaust behavior in sport/sport plus no longer pops and cracks like previous years.

Interior has slight changes with stainless steel looking buttons and also different steering wheel buttons

Additional items:

Engine update/improvements: better HPFP / injector system, redesigned turbo/intake
I believe the 2020 comes with the new 3rd gen ZF 8 speed transmission (8HP51)
iDrive 7 available.
Live cockpit pro (full digital dash) available as an option.
Supposedly capable of remote downloadable software updates (i think this is new for 2020)

The latest b58 in the 2020 is a gem and feels quicker than than the 2018-2019 models. But yes, it lost a bit of exhaust character and volume. Maybe it will open up after break in.

I am definitely down about the 2020 losing the crackles and pops, but I was consoled in it having higher hp. Hopefully it is quicker, if it's no more than a ratings adjustment that would be disappointing.

Lol @ new engine. It's a TU, not a new engine. N54 -> B58 would be a new engine.

This debate could go on and on about the specifics, but new engine it is not.

But it can run 3.3s 0-60 times and 11.6s 1/4 miles with a stage 1 tune. Can a non TU do that?

Here's a 2018 doing 3.8 with a stage 2.
3.3 stage 1 sounds BS, source?

That is very impressive. However that's an e30 tune with e30 fuel, probably using much tighter timings and higher boost pressures than your typical stage 1 tune.
Very impressive, nonetheless. But I still would not call it a new engine. Just an improved version of the same B58.

The biggest difference in tuned performance is from the HPFP. The B58TU HDP6 flows 23% more than the older B58 HDP5 Evo.

I'm swapping to that pump on my N55 and for older B58 owners it should be straightforward.

I never saw the CF option on the BMWUSA web page. Is there an order code?

Was an option for early 2020 orders. I ordered mine in August 2019 and picked up Oct 1. Option I think went away in December.

Absolutely right same engine just an upgrade.

On my stage 1 93 tune I was able to run 3.6 0-60 and 1/4 11.8.

My stg1 e30 map I'm still working on (beta). Once it's finalized my stg2 e30 in hoping 3 secs flat.

Wards Auto in its award for the new B58 engine listed several changes made to the B58 engine and associated components used in the 2020 X3 M40i. There was not merely a software change that increased horsepower going from the 2019 to the 2020 X3 M40i.

-25% reduction in turbo impeller mass for quicker response.
-New twin-scroll turbocharger integrated into steel exhaust manifold for faster response and more power. Previously, exhaust manifold and turbo were two separate items.
-Lower compression ratio to offset greater turbo boost.
-New high-precision direct injection operating at 350 bar of pressure (5,076 psi), up from 200 bar (2,900 psi) in previous 340i sedan.
-New dual-branch exhaust system.
-New eighth-generation DME 8.6T.1 engine management.
-Split cooling circuits – low temp for air-to-liquid intercooler and high temp for engine cooling.
-One-piece timing chain reduces friction compared to previous two-piece timing chain

I am waiting my X4 M40i 2021, but I dont know much about the new iDrive 7.

All comes with Live Cockpit?, here in Mexico I didnt have the option to select the Live Cockpit or not, so I think I will have in the X4.

Is this the BMW assistant ? like Google, Alexa, etc ? or is something else ?
