You can't beat British humor. Always enjoy Matt Watson's reviews. He seems to come to the US often. Check out his X5 review from the BMW plant in South Carolina.

It's nothing but a Jacked-Up GT.

Really like these! I am curious to understand why they are only just being delivered though and are without BMWs new full digital dash? Seems like an oversight when the Z4 reviews are also just coming out?

I feel that many want a digital dash like the Audi virtual cockpit on BMW for bragging rights. In reality, I rarely ever look at the gauges because I have HUD. To me all the key info should go on HUD, and rest can be on some centre screen, Model 3 style. Thats the way to go, not this complicated dash with lots of lights on it that you just wanna switch off after a while. This opinion is after driving Audi with its virtual cockpit. As for X4 - a pointless pointless car. Its like a car you buy for your 27 year old daughter.

A true full digital dash would let you redesign it and a high resolution OLED component would ensure it would not age prematurely.
I guess 27 year old girls don't drive real cars. |

I'm not getting the "redesign it", you want to be able to customize your gauges how? Just move them around or something else entirely?

Actually, it's more than the dash (screen) that I'm concerned. The new dash also comes with a refreshed console and some changes around the gear shifter area.
The current one is fine, but this design is already 4-5 yrs old (started with the G30). The new updated interior will definitely make it look less old. |

Everyone talks about the sloping rear and how it limits storage. I had the exact same problem with my X5 when trying to transport large square items.
Hey they put the gas strut back in the X4. The one thing I miss from the X5. And that rear seat release is trick not sure if I would trade it for the on seat release but both would be great. Nice review. |

G30 5-Series launched February 2017 and the interior on that car trickled down from the G11 7-Series introduced in 2016. Those interiors are only 2 years old at most. I don't like some of the changes in the iDrive 7.0 interiors. Don't care for the gimmick gauges, despise the location of the engine start/stop button in the center console and that's just to name a few...That interior will too be ancient in 2 years time...

The F30 still had the rocker switch for the drive modes, the different camera buttons and the older iDrive controller. The G01/G02's center console setup is completely different with separate buttons for each drive mode and the newer parking button.

Good points on the details of the individual switches. I'm just talking about the general outlook and layout. In the old F10 and F25, the idrive screen is embedded into the dashboard. In the F30 and the G01, the idrive screen is free standing above the dashboard. In the latest design (G05), the idrive screen is standing above the dashboard, but it's sideways attached to the instrument cluster.
