Mission Performance Trans Tune Review

Hey guys,

So I want to provide a quick review on the new Mission Performance Transmission Tune for the 8HP50 (found on X3 M40i and other "x"40i models).

Background -
I have been running the Stage 2 ECU tune for 5k+ miles over the past 3ish months with no other mods. The tune is great, I run 93 all the time with track runs or "fun runs" every so often. The tune has been quite flawless with no issues at all. Best times for E30 0-60 was 4.11 and 1/4 was 12.38@111. Very nice.

The only thing I noticed was during shifts sometimes there would be a quick blip in accel and later found this to be torque reductions taking place from the factory.

Fast forward -
Alex @ Mission Performance has been working diligently on a Transmission Tune and made some extreme headwinds on torque reductions and shift speeds for the 8HP50. Once fully tested and tunes figured out across all the platforms it was off to the races!

I flashed the car last week and ran it for 400 miles since...
- Part throttle shifts are quicker (yay!)
- Full throttle shifts are very quick (super yay!)
- Torque limitations raised (woot woot).

So of course I did some before and after testing with my Dragy (all valid runs within acceptable slopes) -

2018 X3 M40i
93 Octane ~ 28* F
Stage 2 Tune Only
0-60..... 4.13
0-100... 9.78
20-80... 5.65

93 Octane ~ 34* F
Stage 2.5 Tune and Stage 1 Trans Tune
0-60..... 4.01
0-100... 9.54
20-80... 5.29

Other fun facts...
1. There was a little chirp in my tires so 0-60 in under 4 seconds with 93 octane is very attainable with traction.
2. My best E30 1/8 mile time was 7.93@88.61 with Stage 2 and my best 1/8 mile time with Stage 2.5/Trans Tune is 7.85@90.21 (not exactly apples to apples due to DA change but you get the idea).
3. E30 should easily net a 0-60 in under 4!

Some nice reading on engine and trans tunes - https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1571653

Let me know if you guys have any questions.

Thanks!

Estimated to be as fast, wont know until car mags test. Then again it’s also got a measly 1,000 lbs on me... or an approx. full second worth of weight in the racing world.

Sounds like a good tune. I love my 0-60 times of 4.00 with JBL but I hate how it falls off so bad at each shift point.

Are you running a DP?

I can't believe you get traction at those cold temps, mine just spins if it under 40f.

It is pretty good! The fall off and part throttle cut off with JB4 is what deterred me from that tune.

No downlipe, no intake, just software.

I don’t know how much traction I’m really getting as your 0-10 still beats me by .15 seconds.... so I still think there is improvement there (better tires then the AST) but appears I can make it up from 10-60.

Best part is with 100 octane or E30 I’ll be 3.7-3.8 all day long and 1 ft roll out of 3.5

I flashed it myself, just need the cable from amazon to connect to laptop, then have internet connection, turn car on and follow prompts to flash. Pretty easy!

Goood point! I updated the thread above to reflect engine and trans tune.

Here is a good read from the tuner himself on difference on the tunes - https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1571653

So the stages include the transmission tune, correct?

Is stage 3 what I want? I have access to 93 pump gas and 100 street legal race gas so I can make the octane to whatever. I run 96 on Map 5 on JBL.

I am either going to change to this tune or go back to an AMG. It would be cheaper to hold on to the M40 for another year but ultimately, I will go back to an AMG unless the X3M is just too good to pass up.

I’m very interested in this tune as well. Waiting on you to be the second tester. I only have 92 here but mix in one gallons of E85 to get me to 93.

GTR do you know how much extra boost the tune runs or is it purely software. I’m still a noob with this. Thanks for the feedback btw!!

Engine and Trans Tunes are separate purchases.

You can only get Stage 3 or 2+ or what ever is after stage 2 with the Stage 1 trans tune.

There are a lot of other folks with Stage 2+ and Trans tune then just me

I see boost around 20 psi or so with a quick log. Stock is 16?

How is the shifting during every day driving? Smooth, jerky, etc?

Also, did you do any runs stock, before the tune for comparison?

Does Burble Mode apply to us? I believe the other B58s didn't have burbles, unless this is Burble Plus like how we have Sports Plus

I went for M-Boot so it doesn't show up on the flash counter when going back to stock... although I never had to go back to stock so...
Everything else I don't think you need unless you don't want a speed limiter or cold start delete.

Shifting everyday driving is the same if not better. No jerkiness or anything like that, very nice.

What is burble mode? If we do not opt for that, will the tune remove the overrun condition we have stock?

You don't plan on flashing back to stock when taking it in to the dealer for maintenance/service?

Also, how does this whole setup do when it's below freezing outside? For comparison, my experience with piggybacks has been subpar when it's below freezing.

Hey op.

I am pretty sold on going with mp in a month or so. Do you think the tranny tune is worth it for more of an every day driver just looking for more power.

I am coming from a modded m235i so I am missing some of that go.

Also can you elaborate slightly on what the heck is m boot. The website isn’t very foretelling
