Lane Departure Warning
Has anyone seen this actually work?
Supposed to give a dash indicator and rumble the steering wheel if you drift over a lane marking without indicating. Spent a few minutes trying to force it to alert on the way in this morning by drifting over the line. Didn't go off once. |

I think it reacts too late. It only lightly vibrates the steering when the wheels are on the white line ....... therefore you can feel the white lines and cats eyes ...???

The green light indicates that the system has registered and is following a road marking. I don't think it changes when the wheel vibrates??

If the indicator in the dash goes away, usually it's because speed decreasing under the limit (70kmh here I believe), or that the lines are covered with sh*t. If searching the forum, you will also find a thread about vibration not working in many cars. I think it was a design fault, making it stop after quality check in the factory .. /n |

If the dash icon is green (ie the system sees the lanes properly and your car is at the right speed), and the vibration warning is already set at maximum, you still felt nothing from the steering wheel while deliberately testing it by riding over the lane line, then a trip back to dealership is warranted. Before you do that though, you may want to ask a friend or relative to test it for you to see if they can sense any vibration from steering wheel. As other had suggested, the vibration can be subtle for some people and interpreted merely as road feedback instead of a deliberate warning.

glad to hear I am not alone in thinking its WAY too subtle.
It SHOULD feel like the rumble strips on the highway, I would say mine is 25% less noticeable even on high setting. |

Completely agree with all the opinions above. I had a 5 series loaner and the vibration was noticeably stronger than on our X3. I may need to bring it back to have that looked at.

Mine works, although sometimes I wish it didn’t. I definitely feel the vibration if I stray over the line without the blinkers on. It’s actually pretty annoying and I may turn it off.

Isn't the vibration setting (low, medium high) adjustable in iDrive?

Lane Departure Warning
Yes, it is. Many reports that even on higher setting it's no very noticeable. Mine works ok for me, just like the rumble strips on the road.

I can actually hear the vibration more than I can feel it. It is almost as if the vibration unit is disconnected from the steering wheel.
I took into my dealership and they did a test drive, and told me it was working as intended. They also took apart the steering wheel and tightened everything, but I felt there was no difference. |

Lol...yes, you are correct that is the “right” answer. And that is why I have left LDW on. The negative reinforcement helps but there are still occasions when it causes issues such as being in a turn only lane on the highway and just following that lane but the lines on the highway diverge and the car wants me to go straight. Yes, turning the blinker on would fix that situation but strictly speaking it isn’t required in this case since it is a turn only lane. There are other examples too. But point taken on blinkers.

Mine is set to medium and its plenty of feedback for me. In fact it intervenes so much that I'm starting to question my driving skills.

Mine works fine! Vibration is subtle, but that’s all you need once you get used to it. You can also deselect steering intervention for it, which I do when not on dual carriageways or motorways. Also remember that lane departure is different to the semi-autonomous steering.
