MY2020 Dilemma
So I'm currently eyeing out what I plan on getting for the future and the X4 M40i is at the top of the list. The dilemma comes into part where it was mention that the MY2020 is suppose to get the updated cabin tech. I'm personally not a fan of the new digital cluster especially with the rev counter and speedometer going vertical now. I was thinking of maybe going for a CPO 2019 but being that this is its first model year, it's a possibility it could be prone to a lot of problems but 2020 and so on is going to have the weird infotainment system but potentially better reliability. Thoughts?
Also with the new power bump to 380hp from like 320hp in the new M340i, do you all think the X4 will be getting the same treatment? It's not like it needs it but having that more HP disposable doesn't hurt. If not I might have to look at the new M440i whenever that comes out.

For normal I hope they don't go for that half digital half analog thing they have now. Looks extremely tacky

The G02 is mostly a re-shaped G01 which has already had time to work the "year 1" bugs out. A friend of mine who normally churns through cars every 6 months has kept a G01 for over a year because it's been such a good car. So I'm not stressing too much about year 1 kinks.

I personally think waiting for the new interior tech will be worth it. That’s what I plan to do for the MY2020 version of the X4 M40i. If you plan on holding on to your vehicle for awhile (I usually keep mine for 8 years), then I usually want to get every option with the latest technology so it stays “relevant” longer.
My only concern is how sure is everyone that the MY2020 will actually get the interior tech upgrade? Is it just rumored or has anyone been able to confirm? Of course anyone at the stealerships say you can’t count on that news - but I realize they’re also just trying to push a MY2019 sale on me. Last edited by keeva381; 12-26-2018 at 08:08 AM.. |

Any update on the MY2020 versions yet?
I'm in the market for an X3 M40i after testing one at the weekend. I drove the Audi SQ5 and was disappointed with it (I currently drive the S4 Avant), the driving experience just felt a bit numb, the power didn't really seem to be there, seemed heavy and sluggish. So I went for a drive in the X3 M40i expecting to equally hate it so I can move on to looking at maybe another estate car, but was quite surprised, apart from the drivers seat that I couldn't get comfortable in but mostly because the sides were pumped up and I didn't have the time on a small test drive to alter it properly, I was impressed! They tried to offer me a stock car that nearly ticked the boxes, but I'm glad I went away to think as it wouldn't be right. Ultimately mine would have to be a factory order, so at this point delivery is estimated at July. So should I wait a few more months and get whatever comes with the MY2020 upgrade? or just get to ordering one? Have searched google for MY2020 but not that much is given away at this point?? |

But what about the MY2021 upgrades??!!... :-)
I think it's normally July onwards for the subsequent model year. I can't remember the details, but I'm sure I had read that the factory line has to shut down and be upgraded/reconfigured for next model year. Your dealer should be able to tell you when they will start being able to take orders and builds for MY2020. I'm not sure that X3 G01 is ready for LCI yet though, it was only released 2018 - isn't it normally about 3 years before BMW typically do LCI? |

The G01 receiving the new tech this summer (MY20) has been mentioned a few times but I would be very surprised if it actually got it. The new X3M and X4M are both being badged as MY2020 models and neither of them have it so I would have thought they will wait for an LCI which I really doubt would be before MY21 at the very earliest. I am happy to be proven wrong though.

Isn't G01 started its first MY in 2018, i.e. 2019 MY is the version 2.0 ?

A couple of things to think about:
1. The first year model for the g01 was the 2018 so you already have a year for model refinements. 2. I doubt the 2020 will showcase the updated interior. As someone else has mentioned, the new x3 M and x4 M are being released with the current interior and it seems highly unlikely they would update the interior so soon after that release. 3. The x3 has sold incredibly well for bmw, despite minor issues some of us have experienced. With it selling so well, I think they are in no rush to update the full interior. They might change the gauges but I wouldn’t expect a major Re-design. 4. Just like Apple products, if you are always trying to get the latest and greatest BMW, you will either never buy anything or you’ll be upgrading every year. BMW has made a habit of staggering car launches and creating buzz for the next update. I was personally a little disgusted at first having bought a brand new vehicle knowing that every vehicle coming later in the year would feature an all new interior design, but I got over that and actually really like my interior design. I hope this helps. |

You should consider using the upcoming MY2020 as a bargaining tool. Get one of the last ordered 2019s as they would be a tough sell on a dealer lot with the 20s around the corner.
As for the upgrades supposedly coming, the car does not need any more power and in any case it already has been shown to have as much oomph as the promised upgrade would provide. BMW continues to greatly under-rate their engines so don't worry about getting left out in the cold with the 2019 spec. As for the new digital cluster, I also think it is unlikely to show up given the X3M does not have it. In any case I think the digital cluster currently available with the Executive package (in the US) is a much nicer design. It is lifted straight from the outgoing 7-Series and to my eye it looks much better than the latest offering in the X5/3-Series. |

Thanks for the comments and thoughts.
My dealer had a look around for a car to suit my needs, but for the spec I wanted they had nothing that delivered it although they were willing to drop their pants on a stock car that was as close as they could get, so a factory order would be needed to achieve my desires. The test car was nice, certainly had some pull although not as much as my current car, but enough to be happy with. The synthesised engine sound through the speakers was a gimmick, but with acoustic glazing you're hardly going to hear all the pops and bangs. As it'll be a factory order to suit my spec I doubt there's much arm turning there to be had at this stage, so to wait another month or 2 for a newer MY2020 build that may contain something more could be an option. But if they offer a deal to get the existing MY2019 one I wouldn't really be disappointed either, still a great car. |

Everything is always bigger and better. If you are always holding out you will never buy anything. Now sure there are some exceptions, like I wouldn’t buy an M3 right now with the G80 right around the corner, but I would lease one.

If the MY2020 updates hold to be true, I would personally wait. We are in the same dilemma, and decided to wait as we are flexible with timing. For me the major selling points are OTA system updates (not just map data), and the big one is the updated fueling system in revised B58.
If you aren't planning on adding power later, and are not planning on getting the full digital dash, than there is not really a reason to wait.
