What would you get?
Just curious what this crowd would look to get that is comparable to an X3 on the lower end. If you could not afford an X3 but wanted something this size what cars would you look at? CRV, Rav4, CX5?

I vote for CX-5 which can give you the premium feeling and drives quite good. Mini is IMO... well... mini really not so spacious as X3 or Mazda.

Yeah, a stripped X1 or the CX5.

X1 without a doubt for me.
I have a X3M40 which is great but I like the size of the X1 more. My daughter just test drove most of the suvs listed and her clear choice was the X1. The CRV's sticker was less but my dealership discounted the X1 way more than the CRV, and CX5. The CRV is not available with Head up display and the CX5 HUD was not that great. The HUD in the X1 is outstanding. A loaded X1 v a loaded CRV and CX5 had a negotiated price of only 1600 more. Better looking, longer warranty, a 3 year maintenence, best handling, best HUD, I drive and on and on. I would have bought an X1M40 if BMW made one. |

To stay on topic and choose vehicles that actually exist today I vote Cx-5.
The problem with the x2 m35 is that it will be more way expensive the the other cars the OP suggested |

I love the look of the CX5, I've owned 2 engines. I drove previous year's CX5 as a loaner.. I was really unhappy with engine.. very rough 4 cylinder. I don't believe for a second it was counter balanced - which I see as a requirement for any 4 banger. I'd like to try the Honda. obligatory video explaining counterbalancing: |

I really like the CX5's steering, nicely weighted for an SUV. The suspension works for me too, sporty. I was impressed by the Ford Escape Titanium's power and handling but I prefer the looks of the Mazda and it's better interior, my favorite in the class. Here's my leaser.

I Have the latest body style CX-5 as well. I shopped the other ones and they are CVTs. The RAV4 is vanilla AF, and the CRV is nice, but they didn't offer HUD at the time. THis is our 3d CX-5 in a row. The CX-5 isn't as "sporty" as my X3, but as far as features go, it's pretty similar. Mazda's execution of blind spot warning is superior as far as notification goes. Not sure why BMW doesn't use an audio warning like Mazda does, and there is a visual warning in the HUD as well. In the past, before the interior upgrades and the old body style, I didn't especially like driving my wife's CX-5, but now it's a nice change when I do drive it. 2014 (RIP- not my fault) First SUV. It did everything it was supposed to in this accident. After a surgery in the family we wanted something taller and easier to get in and out of. It's a base model 2016 - Zeppelin Platz - This one was midlevel and had more features. 2017 - German countryside - I like this one best, it's loaded with everything. It just looks and feels more sophisticated and less entry level.

My M40i was in at the dealer this week for 2 days to sort the exhaust resonance... So they gave me a JCW countryman ... so much fun to drive! It just makes you grin constantly! |

Really interesting responses here. So right now i am about to order an X3 M40 and have already negotiated a deal at about 10% off msrp. Its a lease and i can afford it no problem. Also want to say i have driven the M40 3 times and absolutely love it. I currently have a 335 GT with MPPk and this is a perfect transition. But because i like to mess with myself i got to thinking that maybe i lease a lower end car like a cx5 or crv and add an M240 into the mix. I haven't priced either of those cars out but got a rough idea that both of those would come close to the cost of the X3M40. Then i think that the times i end up driving the crv im gonna wish i had an extra 200 hp to go around that schmuck hogging the left lane. As im writing this i just thought what about an outback?

I don't like my sister's Outback. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's a little dull. Engine is nice cuz she has the Turbo (BIL had a STI so I think it's his influence cuz she's so not into performance). Interior is boring too.
I still prefer the CR-V (sis had one, SIL currently drives one) or CX-5 (uncle has one). I'd have the Honda inching into first place mostly because of reliability concerns. If pricing is an issue, than reliability and unexpected repair costs are more of a concern. |

If you can afford to have the X3 M40i as your normal car and a Viper or GT3 or something for high days and holidays, that’s great! But having owned some truly dull daily drivers I don’t want to go back to those days. I’d rather have an old 540i than a new base model Kia. But... we’re all different, right? |

I think I knew I wanted an X3 at this price point - I have an Audi A4 and didn't want a Q5, and also didn't want a Mercedes, Land Rover, etc. The X3 is as nice or nicer than those, and the driving/tech is great. The Audi virtual cockpit is really nice, though.
But those are all the cars that I knew I DIDN'T want. The only other car we seriously considered was the 2019 Ford Edge...which is a little wider than the X3, but I think it's more close to the X3 than an Escape, no? I've loved what they've done with the Edge over time, and I think the Edge ST looks amazing. They just seem to be dragging their feet on the rollout, with no real information coming out (and nothing really coming out of the forums either - this forum was so much more informative than the Edge forum) that I ultimately decided on the X3 for now. |

Being a satisfied Acura owner (MDX), I liked the new RDX on paper. Drove one twice, scared off by very soft brake pedal. Otherwise it's a great alternative to the X3 30i. No comparison to the M40i. Rumors that Acura will bring out a 6 cyl RDX next year. That could be interesting.
Also agree with others that Mazda CX-5 or -7 handle great, but have rough 4 cyl engine and lame infotainment. Max

none of the alternatives. I'd buy a year old. if your mind is on an x3, nothing you get will suffice besides an x3. you'll just see more x3's on the road driving around in your cx5.
