Idrive shut off

24 X4 M40i. While driving today the Idrive completely shut off and the center of my main screen, where the map is, also went blank. My speedometer and tach stayed on. Lasted about 30 seconds then restarted.

Sometime else that I’ll mention is that since day one I’ve noticed when the car completely powers off either on its own or by me pressing the volume button it makes a clunk noise and I can also feel it slightly on my feet. My 20 did not do this nor the 24 loaner that I just had.

Any thoughts?

I had the idrive shut off once in the month or so that I’ve owned my X3 M40i thus far. In my case, I may have lost the speedometer and tach as well—not sure now. It turned back on within maybe thirty seconds or so. It behaved as if it rebooted. The car worked okay in routine driving during what I assume was the reboot.

My F31 used to do this every once in a while.

I have not experienced the “clunk.”

I’ll definitely say something next time I’m in. Would hate for it to go out completely after warranty.

Okay, I don’t mean to be insulting by mentioning the obvious, and this probably isn’t it, but I’ll mention it just to be thorough.

By any chance is the “clunking” that you hear, the doors automatically unlocking when you turn off the car?

Haha no offense taken…no it’s not the doors. I had my X3 for 4.5 years. And the doors unlock when I turn the car off. Sometimes I’ll sit in it for a while until it completely powers down. That’s when the noise happens.

I haven’t done that yet. I’ll listen for noises when I do. I do hear various mechanical noises after I turn off my current and when I would turn off my previous car. Lots more go on with these cars than ever did with cars from my childhood, including after we turn them off.

(I’m glad that no offense was taken.)

Okay, so I did happen to sit in the car until it completely shut down. (I was on the phone with someone.)

The car made a bunch of mechanical sounds, especially whirring ones. I don’t remember a specific “clunk.” Then again, I was still on the phone, so somewhat distracted.

I’ll try it again one of these days.

This happened to me for the first time this past weekend (22 x30i). Was actually a total pain cuz I was using NAV, luckily I was oriented decent enough to figure out the rest of my trip while it reset. I used to have this happen constantly in my 18 GLC300 and they replaced the unit and it still happened, so hopefully this isn’t something that’s going to keep popping up.

This happened to me once when I bought the car and never again. I figure it’s just the moment the car becomes self-aware.

Just happened again this morning. Luckily need to make my service appointment soon and will have them check it out. Has to be a software bug, seems like it’s impacted other models in the past.

They did a software update. I’ll report back in a few weeks if it’s been working.

Happened to me 4 times in last 2 years. (1 time last year and 3 times within last week) unfortunately car is out of warranty to get software update. Any easy way to update software without going through dealer?

Or the update didn’t fix your problem.

Either way, grrrrrr.

Mine has done the same three times in the last two months, but without the clunk. Must be a software issue - it is doing a CTRL-ALT-Delete on itself!!

Since doing so, the volume of my speed camera warning ping has set itself to maximum volume - does anybody know where to change the volume for this??

2023 X3 (G01)
BMW call the screen the Center Information Display (main screen with Nav, music, back up camera etc). Mine has gone dark a half a dozen times intermittently while driving. The remainder of the car operates normally including the instruments and HUD. Hitting the radio button restarts the system and it starts just like a cold start of the car. Took in into the dealer this morning and they thought it was a software / firmware issue. Will report once I get it back and hopefully it will work.

When I first took my former 2020 X3, on a trip to visit my mother, the iDrive shut-down 17 times during the 2400 km trip according to my SA. They re-booted the system and it never happened again. Nothing so far with the 2024.

The dealer did a complete software update after finding multiple error codes in the Headunit (D1 & D5). Hope it works. I guess we'll see.
