Harman Kardon speaker grills buzzing like crazy
Hi I'm new here. Just picked up my first ever BMW, it's a brand new X3 M40i and it's incredible. I opted for the Harman Kardon stereo which sounds great, unfortunately two of the speaker grills are buzzing like crazy when any kind of bass whatsoever is played. The center speaker on the front dashboard (right behind the screen) has a ridicules buzz. This however the remedy is simple - apply the smallest amount of pressure to the speaker grill and the buzzing stops (as long as the pressure is applied). Second buzzing sound is from the rear speaker in the trunk (on the passenger side). There is a very loud buzzing noise but it seems to be coming from behind the grill as applying pressure at various points around the speaker is fruitless.
Did anyone encounter any of these issues? What was the fix? |

Simple: Take it to the dealer to get serviced, BMW dealers usually go above and beyond fixing things like this

i agree that you should bring it to the dealer to get it checked, as long as the buzz is not a result of distortion due to playing music at very high volume before speaker break in.

I had a slight buzz playing "In the Air tonight" (Phil Collins), when certain parts of the song would play with no bass and just the brass/piano/etc. All other songs have 0 noise or rattles. Weird.

Don't want to sound rude but what planet are you from?? BMW Dealers go "above and beyond"...that sounds like something from Buzz Lightyear I'm thinking.... You are the very first person on this forum that I have every read say that. |

I have the philosophy that I will vote with my feet and my money to companies which value me as a customer. It's not happened yet, but if BMW ever mis-treats me, my current BMW will be my last one. Sorry for being off-topics! |

But yes, agree that if my dealer didn't get something sorted out in a timely fashion or pushed back on a reasonable request, consistently, then yes I'd look to another dealer.

It makes me feel disappointed when I hear about things like this... speaker grilles should NOT buzz, or rattle! Is BMW losing it’s prestigiousness and becoming just another mass produced brand?

I have zero issues with my HK speakers. My guess is that the mounting brackets or something were defective, or the installer did not put things together correctly.

Will be an easy fix no doubt, PITA but not an insurmountable issue

Besides, I didn't say "to Infinity and beyond"..... I stand by my statement, in my 35+ years of car ownership with dozens of cars of all different brands my local BMW dealer's service department has gone above and beyond ANYTHING I've experienced at other service departments. I had an X1 that, at 2 years old, made some creaking noises that any other car dealer I had experienced would have wrote off. My BMW dealer didn't just find the loose clips in the dash and seats that took them hours to find, fully explained and walked thru what they found and did to solve it, and fully charged it to warranty. They also replaced several exterior trim pieces under warranty no questions asked on a 3 year old BMW 328i that any other dealer would have said normal wear and tear from weather. That's just a couple of examples.... Yes, there are some dealers and service that goes above and beyond, and there are some that stink. BMW service so far has been very good to me....

My center dash grill also buzzes when cranking up the standard 676 stereo. More annoying though is that it buzzes in sport plus mode when I'm getting on it. Yes, I know it should be a simple dealer fix, but I live an hour away and I despise sitting around at the dealer while they wrench on my car.

It amazes me that more people don't complain about this issue. It was bad on the F26 X4 and continues to be bad on the G02 X4. It's grossly obvious when you play any song that has a "midbass only passage" and L7 is on.
When you remove the rear grills you'll find there's no rubber gaskets on anything, plastic on plastic, and it's all secured by clips so it's completely unsurprising that it rattles. There's also a lot of lightweight cheap plastic back there that resonates. I had purchased some extra door clips (which DO have rubber gaskets) and added the gaskets to the speaker grille clips which seems to help some. I've still heard some buzzing back there though. I haven't seen exactly how the G01 grilles are vs the G02 ones to give more specific recommendations though. |

That last post alone makes me wonder what the wonderful German engineers are on? I'm not a car builder, but if I was building them I wouldn't put plastic to plastic where speakers are mounted! Simples...

You would. To save money. Nothing to do with the engineering.
