21" x 8.5" and 21" x 10" staggered 7-series rims and tires on 2018 X3 m40i

While I was dreaming about the 18" Blizzak winter rims and tires waiting for me at the Tire Rack distribution center in Denver, I was trolling the Minneapolis Craigslist.

I found a set of brand new set of unused 21" 7-series (G12) M rims, with staggered Run-flat Pirelli P-Zero tires and 433 Mhz TPS already installed.

It was too good of a deal to pass up. So we installed them and they worked!

Front Rims: 21"x8.5". 5x112 bolt pattern. 245/35/R21. Offset +25. MSRP of $887
Front Tires: Pirelli P-ZERO RFT. 245/35/R21. MSRP of $484.

Rear Tires: Pirelli P-ZERO RFT. 275/30/R21. MSRP of $573.

Granted, there is a speedo error of +3% and +4% from stock. So, I may sell em. But they list at $6000 (MSRP)...so ?

Only one blemish. Else, they are perfect!

But, they do fit on the 2018 X3 m40i.

Here they are in their blankets!:

I second that. On my X3m40i the front tires have a load rating of 1929 lbs and the rear are 2094 lbs

The one tire that shows its laod says it is 1653lbs and that corresponds to load index index 98 which is 1653 lbs

I'll play dumb...because I am.

They were off a 7 series. I have to assume that car weighs similarly to our little suv. 1653 x 4 is 6500 lbs and the car is 4500 lbs.

What about those guys that stick a tent, water bottles, gas cans, hi-lifts, lights, racks, suspension, lifts, rims, wheels, tires, etc on their jeeps and then drive around? All that crap has got to weigh hundreds of pounds more than normal.

(BTW...are they keeping a tent on top just in case they need to pull over for a nap? What a waste of gas.)

I think we are talking infinity + 1 here and that will have little true effect.

But...am an honestly dumb on this subject. Enlighten me!

Stock tires have a load rating of 100-105 I believe, those are 98s, are you going to blow them out or have an issue? I doubt it. They are technically illegal though and could be a point of contention for insurance if you had an accident.

I doubt there is a definitive answer to putting on out of spec' tires on a car. Would you put out of spec' oil in your car? (I think some people do though).

As to whether or not putting on tires that are less than what the mfg. recommends... it's hard to tell. I doubt a tire shop would put on tires that didn't meet the mfg's spec' but only because they would be worried about liability.

If you poke around the web you can find a lot of places that say to not put on tires with a load rating less than the mfg. recommends. None are very clear on why though except to say the side walls may break down more quickly.

https://info.kaltire.com/can-you-use...facture-tires/

https://blog.firestonecompleteautoca...re-load-index/

Keep in mind that when you brake your front tires, really the sidewalls, have a lot more "weight" put on them than what you would measure for a car standing still. It's similar for when you turn around a corner. BMW was taking into account the stress a tire takes in all situations, not just when the car is standing still, when it spec's the tires to use.

I don't have pics of them installed. I wish I had before I put them away for the winter!

I was in the fence on whether I wanted to keep them.

I definitely think they look amazing. But, the winter tires I got a day later are perfect and just what I want. I do not have a need for three sets of tires.

I think I am going to try my luck on Craigslist. See if anyone bites.

Alrighty.

So you understand how much I wanted to provide this info, this is what I had to do:
1. Bring the tires from the basement
2. Remove their sleeping bags
3. Jack the front of the car
4. Remove Winter Tire
5. Install 21" tire.
6. Unjack the car
7. Jack the back of the car
8. Remove Winter Tire
9. Install 21" tire.
10. Unjack the car
11. Take a billion pics
12. Reverse the top 10 steps.

Yea...it was worth it to see how amazing these look. Heck, the wife even joined me in the Griswald "viewing of the Grand Canyon". [look it up]

Nope. Tires are removed and put away until the current tires (6k miles) are bald. All the pictures are taken.

Looking again, there is one that is a profile. It is sideways in my posting above. Oops!

I would go with the bigger sidewalls, once the old tires are worn. But that looks amazing

Those wheels with the stock 21" bridgestone alenza tires would be perfect.
