22 M40i Two Week Review
Have had my 22 M40i for two weeks. Traded in my 16 Macan S. So far it’s more positive then negative. The positives are many. The technology is far superior then the Macan S. Nav easier to use. HK readily better then the Bose. Power is immediate. In Comfort there is no lag/hesitation, when pushing the throttle down. HUD works Great. Adaptive cruise control works great. Driveability seems excellent-except. The transmission is excellent. Mild hybrid used for take off from stop is excellent. Don’t even know car is off.Negatives- the Macan is more responsive and seems more planted to the road. Could be the run flats. Ride is rough, again probably run flats. Seats-not as adjustable as the 14 way seats. No electronic adjustable steering wheel. No better then 10 years ago. No easy entry for a 60K car.
I really like the car yet don’t want to replace the run flats and spend another grand. |

I briefly owned a M40i and had those same wheels and Bridgestone Alenzas on. Then I got the X3M and had the summer Continentals. Switched to a Michelin All Season performance tire.
Where I'm going with this is… tires can completely change the ride, feel, and handling. So I'd give it a serious thought about switching the tires once you can justify it. If you're willing to sacrifice run flats and go with a traditional tire the ride quality will significantly improve. I personally thought the Alenzas were good, not too harsh but the Continentals definitely were rough compared to the Michelins I have now. No run flats on the X3M, I'd imagine it would be terrible.

I think your right. Which Michelins All Season did you pick. Many people on this form pick the Continental All Season. I just might need to bite the bullet. Thanks for the comment.

I had Alenza (21") on my 2020 combine with the sport seat, the ride was so hard that I started to look to trade X3 in week 2.
The 2022 still has Alenza (20") but the seat are more conformable (softer foam). I switched to winter tires and the ride is very smooth. Can't wait to ditch the Alenza and get the Michelin A/S. |

The main task now is to sell the summer tires. Currently have the Michelin Latitude Sport 3 ZP. You can either look at the Continental or Michelin Pilot sport AS. Michelin's are bit on the costlier side. |

I’m planning on ordering performance run flats when I order and then switch out to a set of Michelin Pilot AS4s. I have the AS3s on my TL and have been very good in MN winters.

Are you thinking Adaptive Drive Mode, which isn't on all the time BTW as it isn't available on the LCI according to BMW ? Last edited by avi66; 01-08-2022 at 07:42 AM.. |

The LCI M40 comes with M Adaptive Suspension. What it doesn't have is Adaptive Drive Mode that dynamically adjusts the adaptive dampers and other chassis parameters on the fly based on driver input, road conditions, nav info info etc. Last edited by avi66; 01-08-2022 at 08:31 AM.. |

OP - You know me from other posts/threads (because we both came from Macans), and I agree with 95% of everything you said... the only thing I'm somewhat different on, is that, yes, the Macan steering is more responsive/better feeling, BUT, I don't feel the weight of my X4 nearly as much as I felt the weight of the GTS. Having said that, I'm not going to lie, I still felt WAY more comfortable tossing around the Macan at speed than I do the X4... but I'm getting more used to it day by day.
Back to your diagnosis... Yes, absolutely. The ride is much more harsh in the Beemer. Hands down. But I knew this going into it. And mine is on 21s!!! (Tho, at the moment, I have my 19 winters on, so that helps a little). It's just the nature of the Beemer. Having said this, I agree 100% with other owners. I think you'll be surprised on how different the car will feel on non-RF tires. I completely understand on you not wanting to bite another 1-2K for a tire change... In fact, I decided not to do it, and just wear out my Alenzas... But when those are toast, I'm moving to non-RF Rubber for my summer set-up. I still love the car; but since I bought mine and plan on driving for 4-5 years... I decided not to ditch the tires and instead just wear them out. When I make that switch, I'm also going to powder coat my stock wheels "wet black" to match the rest of my car trim. Should really change up the car for the last half of my ownership. Good luck! And keep us posted on what you decide to do. |

Thanks for the review and comparison. Glad to hear that you are liking the M40i. If you were given a choice now...which, would you go with?
Like others, I also switched from the summers (which are sitting in storage). Went to all season NRF tires. I went a bit cheaper and got the Sumitomo HTRs. I attempted to develop a comparison of that and the OEM tires...but I am not knowledgeable to know the difference. |

Bob, I ran the Sumitomo Hr 03 ultra high Performance on the Macan. They were $180.00 cheaper then the Michelins. I really liked them yet had this gut feeling that they had softer sidewalls.
To answer your other question. If I take off the Run Flats then the answer is a definite yes, I would buy the M40i. What I miss from the Macan the most is the seat adjustment, easy entry and the electric steering wheel adjustment. In addition, the Macan seat was a little wider at the legs/knee. That said, the 22 Macan was $14,000.00 more if built with the features that come with the M40i. That made buying the M40i a no brainer. I finally got the exhaust flap open in Comfort mode and the car sounds “sweet”. |

Just picked up my x3 m40i today and also coming from a Macan.
The run flats are easily the worst part of this car, noisy and bumpy. Getting them replaced ASAP |

I just sold my 2019 Macan s as well. Funny how we all picked this car, well I went x4 m40i but same platform. I find myself feeling the x4 more beefy and rowdy feeling, but the Macan was easily better built.
The interior, prestige, road holding and overall feedback are much better than the bmw but the build on the 2022 S was 15k more like a prior poster. So I went with the bmw. I do feel the ride is smoother even with RF than my S at least in comfort. Enjoy in good health! It's very quick I find as I started opening her up. |

F82-I don’t have an issue with the build quality. This engine in the BMW is so smooth. Just think, you also don’t need to worry about timing cover bolts breaking and oil leaks that require the Macan engine to be pulled.
Since the X4 is basically the same as the X3, think about pulling the 7.5 fuse in slot 203. The X4 will sound very close to the Macan on start up and cruising. Good luck with your X4. I’m actually disappointed in not going with the X4. |
