Happened again to me today and I use this method as well.

Edited to add: you don’t have to let it fully connect to Bluetooth, just cancel and go back to CarPlay to speed it along.

My phone is on a belt clip and I’m wearing a coat buttoned up so it would be a pain to have to use the phone to reconnect.

My morning trip to the train station is only 5-8 min so even 1 minute messing with things isn’t worth it.

It’s way cool when it works though.

Common problem sometimes you have to restart idrive and or the phone. I have had mine since July and can say it happens almost daily. Newer apple software seems to help but its a function of wireless carplay

I'm having this issue too, but sometimes the car doesn't connect to the phone at all. Nut'n Honey. I've found that when I do connect, it's faster to change the sync from Carplay to regular & then back again. Going in for my break in service later this week. I'll ask about it then.

It's happened, but a simple disconnect/reconnect works within seconds

For the most part, yes. But I had an issue where even after I disconnected, it would not connect at all until the next time I started up the car. That's only happened once (so far).

This is usually a cable issue. Just because your cable is ok in other devices or cars doesn't mean it will work in this car. My accord eats cables every 3 months or so. Acts the same way you are all describing. My GFs old Cruze was the same. And now her e92 M3 is even more sensitive.

TLDR: buy a new cable and test that.

Most of us are using wireless CarPlay connections.

I saw your previous post saying nevermind, but to everyone else, I didn't think CarPlay works with a cord in x3m/x4m's. Am I mistaken?

I have no idea. I haven't tried it. Don't have a modern bmw with CarPlay lol I'm assuming you could use wired though.

I know my Honda, her e92 and her Cruze are all super sensitive to cables though. I have have to replace them every 5 months or so. Tried lots of high end cables, official cables, cheap cables. They all die quickly. They will work fine in my pc and chargers though. It's just working with the car that's funky.

I’ve found a lot of people with cables that go bad are disconnecting by pulling on the wire rather than the connector. I typically use the same cables for the life of my phone by disconnecting them properly.

Same for any plug.

I disconnect by the head, don't lean the cable against anything. I have never had cables go bad outside of my car. I believe it's the extreme temp changes that do it. I live in the northeast and it fluctuates a good 30 degrees everyday. Plus if it's 20f outside and I get in and it warms up to 70f that's huge. Plus salt.

I've had the issue since I've had this car. Sometimes I walk into the car and carplay is already connected, and other times I have to manually "connect" device.

It seems like the wifi connection at home plays a role - when the phone is not connected to a network just prior to getting into the car, it seems to connect 100% of the time.

I’ve noticed this as well. If I drive away from my house it usually connects successfully.

Today it would not connect at all so I restarted the phone and forgot the BMW device. Had to do that about 5 times before it finally worked.

I also shut off/on the car and it didn’t help either.

I absolutely hate the car due to the crap car play connection.

Had to delete the connection a number of times since having the car in December. It's also been shite when trying to connect the car and said it can't connect to car.

If it carries on it's going in to bmw to get looked at.

The dealership/ service department here in Dallas said that there’s nothing they can do fix the issue.

Like others a disconnect/reconnect seems to be the best way to bring it back to life.

I have also noticed that I can get to the Carplay symbol when you scroll all the way left but pressing it does not go to Carplay. But if I pick the phone up and open the Waze app (assume it works with other apps), it comes back to life and starts working.

Almost exclusively this bad connection happens when I am moving from a connected wifi (work or home) on my phone and then get into the car.

I do note that non-BMW owners seem to have the same issue so assume Apple has to share some of the blame.

Perform a network reset, this fixed it for me and have not had issues.

Ok.... if you are getting the car play button but it won't switch to the car play screen, I have the quickest fix. Took me awhile to figure it out.

Long hold the voice button on the steering wheel. Once Siri is activated, short push it. The car play will almost always then come up on screen.

Another thing I found that seems to work if CarPlay isn't turning, is open Google Maps enter whatever address (sometimes merely opening the App does it), and it instantly turns on CarPlay.

Edit. Noticed similar help mentioned above.
