Too bad for you I posted from e90post.

Seriously, the brakes went completely out after 2 laps. And there has been a long debate on M3 post about the 335i and how you would have to upgrade the brakes to M3 spec. As it turns out, an M3 spec 'upgrade' would be quite dangerous on lap 3.

When the British press calls the car a dog it is journalism. When I do, it's trolling? Ummm, OK

The Nissan GT-R is like an OK looking girl who has an awesome attitude. Her attitude makes her look hotter and hotter. Versus a hot girl with no personality; "All show and no go."

She may not be the prettiest, but her resume and skills sure can perform!

Yeah, I'm so sure the British Press actually thinks that the M3 is a dog, especially because the tester owns the M3 he thinks it is a dog. So if the M3 is as fast as a C6, are you saying that that is a dog too?

By the way, I love both of the cars that you own and am a big Porsche fan. But, even so, I know that the M3 could easily take the Cayman S for the same price

I could be wrong but a simple swap of brake fluid for track days helps to eliminate the type of problem the reviewer was experiencing

Thanks, but according to my research that is not true, at least not on most tracks. If it were, perhaps I would have bought the M3. If you are talking about luxury GT's with 4 person capability, then OK I see your point (but I'd rather buy a slightly used 997).

Now I'm posting this not to argue, my feelings on the M3 are very well known. I'm posting this for the guy coming along doing research on how to spend his $50-$70K on a sports car that perhaps has the C6, M3, Cayman S, etc... on his radar.

Also note that "theoretically" we all bow to the GT-R, which was my long term desire until recently, and may become my desire again in a year or so with the V-Spec.

Top Gear, Jan 08:

QUOTE:

"A day spent nailing the pair (M3 & CS) around the Downs, coming up with the same conclusion at every corner. The Cayman is te one that'll take you around it, flat and full of confidence, while the M3, even more than the RS4, is the one that'll roll a bit and probably have warranted a dab of the brakes beforehand anyway"

"In a straight squirt, the Cayman pulls away too, but in those corners, short of a level of heroics this road tester readily admits to lacking, it leaves the M3 at an apparent standstill"

"On Britain's tricky B-Roads, the Cayman leaves the M3 for dead. Just as you'd expect"

"In every imaginable respect, the Porsche is a superior sports car"

"There's a point that needs stressing: 4 seats do not make the M3 exempt form a Porsche-shaped shafting"
END of QUOTE

BTW, I've discovered through my research the Cayman has a couple of track problems of its own...thankfully they are easily fixed.

Brake fluid and track pads most likely would have helped some, yes. But those still don't cover for the fact that while the competition is using 4 and 6 pot brakes, typically from a respected brake manufacturer, the M3 comes with inferior (for track use) 1 piston floating caliper brakes. Also, a simple search of the tests reveals this to be a common complaint from many if not most of the track reviews...M3 brakes just not up to snuff.

However, I will say this. BMW has made those same type of brakes work fairly well in the past for all but the most hardcore track junkies and racers, I'm wondering if there is a heat soak issue with the e92 M3? And if so, there may be an easy fix such as stainless brake lines, additional brake cooling, etc...

I love how the press can say with a straight face that a few 10's of feet or 10ths of a second faster in a given comparison is "left for dead". Gaps of that sort are in the noise if you ask me, espacially when you consider that most owners of these cars can't drive worth a damn anyway. The trick is to match a cars handling character with your driving style and then enjoy and marvel at the engineering that makes these vehicles possible.

QUESTION:

Back when the E46 M3 came out, how did it compare to Porsches, etc? Did it receive this much negative reviews? Seriously, I dont know what BMW was thinking releasing something like this. The M3 is an icon and from everything I read, its just a big disappointment.

Yes, just for the record if you like to go in a straight line, get a modified 335. It's freaking hilarious how some of the 'M' crowd scream all-around track performance until reviews come out like this, and then they go back to straight-line performance.

However, the silver lining is I've read where people are already getting below MSRP discounts here Stateside on the M3 before the car is even released. Competition is a good thing.

Whenever a new M3 has come out, people have always been pissed that it weighs 400 lbs more than the last one, and handles worse, even though it has more power. Nothing new.
