Can't register key

Just picked up new to me X3 M40i and sales genius helped set up myBMW. However, whe. He tried to set up my key, we got error message to say key is already registered.

We tried several time to unregister both keys and try again but no luck. My wife’s key was able to get registered.

Any suggestions?

Rick

They are now telling me the 2021 x3 m40i can only register one key. So I have to switch profile manually for second key. Does this make sense?

No. Sounds like now that they sold the car and have your money, they don't want to deal with it.

You should be able to register two keys. If the fob in question will not start the vehicle (registered in I drive or not), it sounds like the individual who traded in your X3 pulled a fast one on the dealer and gave them a bogus fob not licensed with the vehicle. There is one other possibility. It could be a replacement fob that is licensed to the vehicle but hasn't gone through the initialization process. This is a simple process that you can do yourself, but I don't remember the details. This might help:

The key works fine except I can’t get it registered to my profile. Sorry if I wasn’t clear

Older iDrive systems only allow one key per profile. Set up an easy to remember passcode for the profile?
I had to do that with a G12.

One key per profile is fine but can’t link my key to my profile. Error message that key is already registered to a profile but when I attempt to unregister, it still doesn’t work

I remember to register the key to profile, the profile had to be linked to like a mybmw app in my case with a 2020. So my wife had to install and make an account. I wonder if that other key is somehow linked to previous owner's mybmw account or something in one way or another.

Thanks for all the replies. Without help from local genius, I figured it out.
