CTS Turbo Intercooler for X3/X4 installed by AIMPerformanceNJ

So I saw someone bought a CTS Turbo fmic in another forum and installed it on his X3 35i, I went ahead and ordered one lucky for me they are having a sale until March 9th & I reached out to CTSTurbo for a GroupBuy. I went on and ordered it, 3-4 days later arrived with Free shipping from Canada big shout outs to Clay@CTSTurbo for providing this + free shipping and receiving it within 3-4 days.

Knowing that CTS Turbo is a big contender in the VW/Audi community, I was looking for reviews for a few months since a forum member wrote up a nice review on their Intake (only fits F22/F30) and the fmic thats made for F22/F30 http://*************/new-intercooler/

After getting the details of what was needed to fit the CTS Turbo intercooler into X3/X4, I took it to my preferred local Fab shop who are experts with taking Porsches to 1000whp+ level. Chatted with them on Monday, made an appt for Today(wednesday) they were nice enough to drop me off at work (avoiding me needing to get a rental for a few hrs, they're 9 miles away). These guys did their magic since it required a little work to fit our car. Before end of day and got a text message with pictures of every angle WOW! (will upload these later)

Having already a great experience last October when I met them and got a Custom Catless Downpipe for my car (X4 M40i already comes with a MPerformance MTuned exhaust from factory) this downpipe frees up ponies & more sound.

I will posting the pictures later on today when I get home and in the mean time if anyone wants to look at some temps how the IC works here's a post from another forum member http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...8&postcount=65

It is MOSTLY a direct fit, just a few tweaks needed to be done by them as I was already aware from another X3 35i owner who tried it. Shouldn't take the shop more than 1.5hr to do this completed, although my shop works heavily with Fabrication for Performance still required some creativity.

To sum it up, it was just another screw for the mount that was needed, a little jammy rigging and some new mount holes so i don't recommend anyone doing this without a lift especially because the upgraded IC weighs more than stock IC.

That's pretty darn effective for an inexpensive intercooler. It doesn't heat soak, and IATs are never more that 20 degrees over ambient. Hell, IATs at 70* were better than the stock IC at 30*! Hitting 18 psi, too. Must be fun.

Yep plus I'm running a Flash & holding boost longer than the piggybacks so prone to more heatsoak.

Hi,

Thanks for the information and creating this thread. Could you post a link to the X3 35i forum that used this intercooler? Do you have pictures of the modifications made?

Hi this was a while ago I no longer have memory of the thread of the guy who did first F30 Intercooler on his car.
But he did mention CTS Turbo was the one he tried so thats why I also used that one.
I just got off Dyno yesterday in 88-90F weather and my IAT temps didn't rise up at all.
Everyone was impressed and said Thumbs Up for CTS Turbo FMIC being very good doing its good.

No I don't have pictures of that area, since it will be noticeable once they're trying to install it.

Basically If you get one you will figure it out it was just another screw for the mount that was needed. The fmic worked it just needed a small little work to get it to mount less than an hour or so. With a little jammy rigging and some new mount holes that need to be taped to the frame to fit.

FSociety,

I pulled the trigger on a charge pipe/compressor pipe kit and the CTS Intercooler. However I have some questions for Pro Tuning before I order a BM3. I have PM'd proTUNING Freaks got no response and then send them the same message via their contact page on the website. Still nothing. Do you know of how to get them to respond?

I have a 2015 X3 that has a PWG.

I have a 2014 X3 with a PWG. Funny how the F25 seems to have soldiered on with the PWG for quite some time after the other F-chassis cars didn't.

But, don't lament. If you have E85 in your area, you can play with mixes up to E40 for some awesome torque that the EWG guys would be jealous of.

+1 lol, the N55 both PWG and EWG development is still on-going so I have hopes that we can run E30 on EWG with efficiency of the extra octane and noticeable gains.

Funny thing is my Flash 93oct map makes more & better power band than what my E30 blend JB4 Map2/Map7 ever made

I pulled the stock intercooler today to compare to the CTS. Let me save you some trouble, it's not even close to a bolt on. I'm putting mine up for sale. Bottom of the front rubber seal and plastic would have to seriously be hacked because it's so much thicker. Also the side 'mounts' stock are two bolts about 1.75 apart whereas the CTS F30 unit is a single center bolt. The tab where the bolts would go is also too far down which would necessitate a fabricated bracket of some sort or something welded to the intercooler. No thanks.

I think the best bet would be to wait until someone makes an X3/X4 intercooler OR maybe the new X3 M 4.0 Intercooler is larger and fits.

I took some pics of mine and I guess I'm going to list it on F30 Bimmerpost classifieds...

The X3 M40i is a whole different chassis/engine B58 uses different parts. No one will spend time to make a direct bolt-on for the X3/X4 due to the lack of demand for it.

Quoted here what the other guy sent me and I sent my shop this same message since they do Fab full-time mainly Porsche, this was not a challenge for them.

Maybe. We'll see. It's not out yet.

LOL. Ok show me how to 'tape' a hole.

And I can fab stuff also...I just don't want to put that much time into it. I don't have a lift so it would be a lot of work. Bottom line I just don't want others to make my mistake and think it's a simple modification.
