Engine quit 6 times while driving
I took my 2013 X3 3.5 MS to Seattle BMW 3 weeks ago because it quit twice. It was running ok the I got a "Fuel Delivery" warning and the engine quit. The same drive home it quit again. The dealership found a bad battery and replaced it (due to age). Now three weeks later it quit again. Dealership has the car and I'm waiting to hear what they find.
Has anyone had this happen and what was the fix?

They found the in tank fuel pump only putting out 3 v and the spec is 6 v. O
ordering a new HPFP. Cost with labor is $800 +. Should be here Tuesday so may get the car back on Wednesday or Thursday. Looking at ordering another i3S as I'm loosing faith in the X3.

Ding ding, ding - I'm the winner....
On the n54s the LPFP (in tank) is the main culprit (thus the guess) the HPFP (external) is usually fine - don't let it get you down - once you get it fixed your done. You didn't buy a BMW for long-term reliability did you? |

Yep. The paperwork says they replaced the LPFP but the discussion was all about the HPFP - I need to find out what they replaced...

SA says it was the LPFP that was replaced. Hope that was the issue as my wife is driving to Eastern WA this next weekend and will not be pleased if the engine quits on her...

Well the engine quit again - this time my wife was driving it to Colville. It quit outside of Moses Lake. I called Seattle BMW and spoke to a service manager who suggested that it may be time to replace the X3 with a new one since it has 122K miles on it. Needless to say it be the i3 may be my last BMW. Car goes to Spokane BMW and I have to deal with getting my wife back home and buying a new car. I really did not expect this from BMW.

Turned out solution was to replace fuel pump control unit (EKPS). Once this work was done problem disappeared. No recurrence for over a year. This issue is very hard to diagnose because it only happens when engine is hot. Dealer had to let car idle for a long while and observed that EKPS was too hot. I’d have dealer check to see if this is the problem for your car. Good luck OP. |

Is there a way to shield that controller from excess heat to prevent issues? Where is it physically located?

Ok TIS shows it's mounted under the rear seat cushion on top of the fuel tank. That's fairly accessible for investigation.

If it's that easy to get to, if it's not very expensive, it could be worth a shot at a DIY replacement. I don't normally suggest randomly throwing parts at things but depending on the price could be worth the gamble. |

Could be less a factor of external heat; perhaps the electronics inside it aren't keeping up with the heat generated by whatever voltage it's delivering to the in-tank pump? I've had no issues with our '17, but might pop the seat bottom out, take a drive and see if it gets noticeably hot to the touch or with an IR thermometer. Pure conjecture here, of course.

Just received the following:
"So initially we had an alternator that’s voltages were not reading correctly, so we ran a 40 minute energy diagnostic and saw the voltages go up into the normal ranges. At this point we monitored the EKPS and are seeing abnormal readings. SO at this point we are suggesting the replacement of the EKPS and programming. We can special order the part and have it in 1-2 days. Cost for parts and labor would be $766.95+tax. If we have the green light from you I can get the order placed and hopefully the vehicle back on the road this week for you."

I am guessing that replacing EKPS will finally resolve your issue. $766 is about $100 more than I paid a year ago for same work. IMO this is a huge safety issue for BMW. If it happened to us you know it has also happened to others. |

I'm flying to Spokane to pick up the X3 tomorrow. It's about 400 + miles from here and that should tell me if we are good to go or if the 2013 X3 is gone. Now looking at Volvo XC 60 as a replacement (if the X3 fails again).

Drove home from Spokane with nary a hiccup. They found the FP controller was overheating so that was replaced - a $350 part.
