Careful Washing Your Car
This post is for those of you who hand wash. I was rigorously drying my car today (after hand-washing it) with the doors open. I was drying under the back door with a large microfiber towel and I started toward the edge of the door and swiftly wiped backward. When I did, the entire plastic trim on the bottom of the door came off. It snaps right back on, but seems kind of cheap nonetheless. I tried the same with the other trim pieces and same results--they just "snap" on and off.
In other words, all four "bottoms" of the doors "snap" on and off. They are not glued on whatsoever. For those of you who had the first gen X3, the door bottoms under the plastic are identical to it (i.e. the body flows toward the bottom of the door creating a sharp line). |

ok, thanks for the heads up, any chance you can throw a pic up though so I can see where you are referring to. I do most my washing myself, with a pressure washer and since I live in Montreal the bottom sides of the car gets dirty EXTREMELY fast.

You open the back door, put your hand in between the back door and the front door, and "push" back. It snaps right off. It takes some force, but trust me, it comes off. The only thing that is holding them on are four small pins, if you push toward the front of the car it puts them in the lock position. If you push them toward the rear of the car they come off.

Crap, tested mine and the whole dang door fell off. What am I gonna do now?
Okay, that's not true. Mine seem solid. Another vote here on checking with your dealer.

i think you should just have it checked out for peace of mind. we'll all have to iron out some of the kinks with these new models that are coming out of a new plant. i've already had a sensor light go on and a leaking schrader valve (air conditioner) that had to be replaced.
call them tomorrow. good luck! |

Granted the X3 is a new car but was the last gen ever this bad when it came to QC? It seems problems have ranged from very minor oversights to major things that make you wonder how they ever missed it. Some things I've seen on this forum include:
1. paint chipping/not curing properly 2. transport tape peeling paint 3. a member's car is jet black while the mirrors are in black sapphire 4. door bin snapping off (this thread) 5. various sensors not working correctly 6. and the one that takes the cake, a member who's backseats weren't even bolted on, they slid right off when braking Overall most of the problems are minor and all of the ones above are covered under warranty. I have nothing against the people who work at the plant in SC but I know quite a few people aren't happy that currently all SAVs are made in the US and not Europe. I'm sure the folks who work in the SC plant are hardworking and competent people but with mistakes like this it doesn't give buyers much faith in the X series SAVs. |
