I think I'd rather spray some high temp paint in there rather than have the dealership monkeys replace the exhaust and potentially introduce new rattles and problems.

Now closer to 5k miles and I noticed over the weekend it looks like my left exhaust is flaking on the inside a bit. It needs a good clean before I can really tell but it looks like both sides might have some paint flaking off.

I'm of a similar mind as @weez here though. As long as the issue remains isolated to the black interior of the exhaust tip I will just fix it up in the spring with some high-temp rustoluem.

Then again I might splurge for a quad-tip cat-back replacement instead, seems a good enough excuse as any right?

another option - do nothing and see if the flaking continues to slowly get worse over time. But get a warranty replacement just before year 4 so we have a new exhaust that could last us until we ditch the car for something else.

This won't work though if the exhaust gets real bad quickly and we can't put up with driving around with a rusty pipe back there

As soon as you start painting it yourself, you’ll void the warranty, so I’d just take it in and get them to replace it.

As I understand it, a warranty can only be voided due to modifications if it can be determined that the modifications in some way led to the warranty claim. If my transmission blows up or my suspension fails they can't point to the exhaust tips as the cause. Aside from using the wrong paint and causing a fire there is no risk here.

They replaced both end cans finally... I'll see how it goes over the next few weeks... no rattles like the original exhaust though

My right side exhaust is now flaking a bit.

Figure I'll bring it up in the spring.

I noticed a 2019 X5 in my work parking lot today with the same issue real bad. Almost not black paint left inside the exhaust tip!

Mine is getting pretty bad on the left side too. No flaking on the right yet..

Seems to only affect builds from Sept/Oct time frame based on whats been reported here so far huh? I guess thats good?

I noticed it's only on the left as well. I wonder if it has something to do with the exhaust dampers being closed on that side at various times.

Hi OP, did they just replace the rectangular end-piece where the flaking occurred, or did they have to replace much more including piping and/or muffler? Also, does the issue go away completely with the replacement part after you have a chance to drive it for more than a month?

My left side has the same flaking issue now, Oct 2018 build with 3k miles. I'm weighing my options, not sure if I want to go see the dealer now, or wait until the first service call...

Hi

They replaced the end "section" as they referred to it. Apparently it's the end cans plus a section of pipe.

And the issue is now completely resolved

Any ideas in why it only seems to be the left exhaust and not the right?

I took delivery of mine in early October 18 so it was a late September build as well. I just turned 8,000 miles and today noticed the paint inside my left tailpipe tip is flaking off as well. Ugh!

Same situation as mine, but I only have 3500 miles. Waiting for my first year oil change before turning it in to deal with this. Maybe right side will also do the same by then, and I can have both done at the same time.

The paint flake is rather flimsy and the exposed area is still metallic shiny so no sign of corrosion or deterioration of any nature, yet...
