Tracking down a 101F01 code!

Hey Guys,

Just picked up my second X3 (2012 N55), I also have. F97 X3M. So far I love it and the only issue is the 101F01 code and a ever so slight idle miss occasionally. Drives great under load...

The last owner recently replaced the Valve Cover, HPFP, Throttle Body without success. It also has a recent Valve Cover Gasket replacement and walnut blast.

Based on videos I have seen, I put a match in front of the PCV diaphragm and saw no air being sucked in. No odd noises either. However upon removing the oil cap there is a decent amount of suction and you can hear it sucking the air in if you slowly open the cap. I looked & listened for vacuum leaks, but found nothing and given the cars performance under load, I don't suspect any.

I have also performed the adaption procedure here without any success. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...63029-9999.pdf

Has anyone experienced this fault? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Happy to report I solved this code and reported 100 miles with no CEL.

The culprit was a bad MAF, even though the MAF did not throw a code itself. Looked good and I cleaned it, no change. After looking at the values, the air mass would range 8-22 kg/h. I figured this could not normal, and it wasn't. New $40 aftermarket MAF on Amazon no varies 13-14 kg/h at idle and the car runs much smoother!

When you mean MAF, you are talking about the one directly mounted next to the filter box pipe right?

I'm having some trouble with my car throwing a CEL.

Correct, Mass Air Flow Sensor that is connected just after the airbox.

There are also 2 MAP sensors, one pre-throttle body and one post-throttle body.

Thanks, ordered an aftermarket one to test to see if that was the issue with the car and will report.

Have you had a chance to replace your MAF sensor?

No not yet, turns out my problem was a failed front crank seal.
I'm going to have the car's rod bearings changed also while I drop the oil pan.
