The answer is obviously going to be market-specific, but what ever you end up with, besides meeting the stated electrical and cranking requirements, make sure its a AGM-type battery.

Advance Auto parts sells a good H9 AGM battery, and they always have coupons if you order online and pick up in the store - I paid about $140 two months ago.

Why do you need to register and program a battery? Can most places that sell and install batteries do that without having to go to the dealer?

I would believe NONE of the battery replacement places can register a new battery. |

The (original) battery in our F25 X3 was replaced in November. The battery was supplied and installed in my driveway by the local roadside assistance group (called the RACQ here in Queensland). After the battery was installed, pulled out his laptop computer, connected to the car via the port in the drivers-side foot well, and reset the system to recognise the new battery. No visit to a dealer required.
Will obviously vary according to market but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that battery suppliers can reset the system. Tony |

My battery is original from Feb, 2012. So coming up on 6 years. It seems like mine will need replacing anytime soon. My car has been garaged when not in use all the time except for 3 months during the winters. I have AAA roadside assistance Plus so I'll give them a call to see if they can do it. Otherwise, I'm out in Salt Lake City so it may have to be the dealer if it happens here. Not sure what they charge but I've heard about $400-$500. Geez....it's just a battery!

Big Kid, Where did you get a scanner to reprogram your battery? I just talked to the dealer and they told me it would have to be reprogrammed by the dealer. They want an obscene amount of money to replace a battery and or reprogram one.

It was on sale (149) during the holidays. If you sweet talk them they might still honor that price. Also, I don't think it can change the type of battery so get the same type battery and register. |

Dealer replaced OEM battery on 2011 X3 35i @ 99K miles, six years to the month of build date. We were getting frequent "LOW BATTERY FUNCTIONS DISABLED" alerts but everything on the car always worked.

I ordered mine directly from the manufacturer (Odyssey). Their batteries are pricier than most but they seem to make a solid battery with a great track record: https://shop.odysseybattery.com/p/49-950?pp=12
Info on the battery line: https://www.odysseybattery.com/Batte...signAdvantages Decided to put most money on the battery itself so installed it myself and registered it using Carly. |

Original battery: https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...hlight=battery 80Ah 800CCA Other battery options: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=61_5704 92Ah 105Ah It appears that the 105Ah is the least expensive on getbmwparts.com. Are all of these AGM batteries? I have BMW ISTA to configure/register the battery. |

It's not clear to me why any H8 AGM battery would not be a suitable replacement. It seems to me that a H8 purchased from Costco, Walmart or Sam's Club for less than $150 would be no different than a BMW branded one. While it's recognized that these must be programmed, is there any reason why generic ones cannot be? The European car manufacturers appear to be masters of turning generic consumable parts into proprietary profit centers.

I believe they are $160-180 thru getbmwparts.com. However, I think the issue I might have run into with other batteries purchased elsewhere is that Ah rating may not always be printed on the exterior of those batteries. ISTA needs to know the Ah rating of the battery if you're programming for a different battery. |
